Qualcomm unveils the Snapdragon 8 Elite

Qualcomm presented its new flagship chip, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, at the Snapdragon Summit 2024. This chip marks a significant advancement in mobile processor technology and stands out from its predecessor with considerable performance and efficiency improvements.

Key highlights:

  • 45% more single-core performance and 40% increased graphics performance compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
  • 63% faster web browsing and optimized performance for AI applications.
  • 44% more efficient power usage for CPU loads.
  • Integrated camera AI functions that take smart image processing to the next level.

Snapdragon 8 Elite: Powerful performance boost

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is based on TSMC’s advanced 3 nm technology. This should lead to significant performance increases and optimized energy efficiency. One highlight is the integration of the new Oryon CPUs that Qualcomm has developed internally. These are being used for the first time in a smartphone SoC and offer an impressive 4.32 GHz maximum frequency.

A lot is said to have happened in the area of multi-core performance in particular. Qualcomm speaks of a 45 percent performance boost here. This should ideally equip smartphones for demanding applications such as gaming, multitasking and AI-based processes.

Snapdragon 8 Elite: Revised GPU

In addition to the CPU performance, the GPU has also been overhauled. The Snapdragon 8 Elite now offers 35% more ray tracing performance, which is particularly important for fans of mobile gaming. The AI performance of the chip is also said to have improved drastically. This is made possible by the Hexagon NPU with six vector and eight scalar cores. Qualcomm speaks of up to 45% higher efficiency in AI tasks.

Another highlight of the Snapdragon 8 Elite is the improved camera performance. With 4.3 gigapixels per second and new functions such as AI Relighting and AI Pet Suite, Qualcomm wants to take photography and video editing on smartphones to a new level. Features such as Video Magic Eraser help users to remove unwanted objects from videos – directly on the device and in real time.

Efficiency and connectivity

Despite the increased performance, Qualcomm has not neglected the energy efficiency of the Snapdragon 8 Elite. According to the manufacturer, the chip should consume 44% less energy for CPU loads and 40% less for GPU tasks. In practice, these efficiency improvements could lead to a significantly longer battery life, even with intensive use. Connectivity has also been further improved: with the Snapdragon X80 modem and support for Wi-Fi 7, the chip ensures ultra-fast and stable connections that will also meet future requirements.

Conclusion

Qualcomm has set a new standard for mobile processors with the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Thanks to significant performance increases, impressive energy efficiency and smart AI features, this chip will be indispensable in the high-end smartphones of the future. In its official press release, Qualcomm has already indicated which manufacturers will be using the Snapdragon 8 Elite. These include ASUS, Honor, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, RealMe, Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi and others. We can look forward to the announcement of corresponding models in the coming weeks.
