The Razer Zephyr respiratory mask, which we have already presented to you, looks pretty nice. However, it is not very effective as a protection against COVID-19 because it does not have an N95 certification. In the meantime, Razer has removed the corresponding rating from the official promotional materials.
Razer Zephyr without N95 certification
Originally, Razer had advertised the Zephyr breathing mask including RGB lighting with N95-tested filters. Now, due to feedback from the community, they are rowing back and announcing that the Zephyr is not suitable as a medical device or N95 mask:
Razer would like to clarify that while the filters used in the Razer Zephyr wearable air purifier have been tested for 95% particle filtration efficiency (PFE) and 99% bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE), according to statements on its website and product information materials, the wearable is neither a medical device nor certified as an N95 mask.
Due to the advertising including N95 certification, end users assumed that the Razer Zephyr, as well as the well-known FFP2 brands can be used in public spaces. In the meantime, however, all references to this on the website have been removed. Although the filtration efficiency is in the green zone, Razer did not have an official classification as a medical product.
For Germany, the Razer Zephyr masks are therefore not allowed for areas where masks are mandatory. Who is caught with the Razer mask, therefore, sometimes risks a fine for the “violation of the obligation to wear a medical mask”.
Razer Zephyr Pro still planned
Despite the restrictions, Razer is sticking to its guns to launch an improved version of the breathing mask, the Zephyr Pro.
In it, the manufacturer installs, among other things, an integrated microphone along with speakers, so that you are better perceived by the outside world when wearing it. There do not seem to be any other changes, which is why an N95 certification is probably missing here as well.
