The recall function with Copilot+ has been delayed again. Following the launch of Copilot+ laptops in May, the tool was supposed to start soon. The planned rollout for Windows Insiders will now begin in October 2024, according to Microsoft.
Summary:
- Recall function allows the PC state to be restored to an earlier point in time.
- Copilot+ offers seamless integration into the Windows 11 ecosystem.
- The feature will be available to Windows Insiders from October 2024.
What is the Recall feature with Copilot+?
The Recall feature, which will be introduced as part of the Copilot+ update, is a new tool for Copilot+ laptops running Windows 11. It allows users to create a complete history of all activities performed.
It can only be used on laptops that offer an NPU with at least 40 TOPS performance, a basic requirement for Copilot+ certification around Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus, but AMD Strix Point also fulfills this requirement. Intel’s Lunar Lake generation in September is also expected to meet this specification.
Recall was actually supposed to be released in June, but was then postponed once again. The reason for this was security concerns, as the entire usage behavior is stored as a copy on the PC and is therefore theoretically vulnerable to attack. In future, a login via Wndows Hello will be required in order to use Recall.
Availability and first impressions
The Recall function will initially be rolled out to participants in the Windows Insider Program in October 2024. This will allow Microsoft to gather feedback and further optimize the feature before it is made available to the general public. Feedback from the test phase so far shows that the feature is particularly popular with users with complex software environments, as it offers a simple solution to system problems.
