RedMagic 7 (Pro): Nubia introduces new gaming flagship smartphones

Nubia has unveiled its new flagship smartphones, the Redmagic 7 and Redmagic 7 Pro, which are expected to make a splash in the gaming segment. They are equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, while the Pro variant with an edge-to-edge display including an under-display camera and other features is particularly exciting.

Redmagic 7 in detail

The Nubia Redmagic 7 and Redmagic 7 Pro are already available in China, and the global launch will take place on February 22, 2022. The cheaper model also comes with Qualcomm’s current Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship SoC, which is kept in check thanks to an RGB fan and VC Liquid Cooling.

Depending on the variant, the chip is supported by 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM and 128 to 512 GB of storage. Nubia installs a 6.8-inch AMOLED panel with FHD+ resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels) and a refresh rate of 165 Hz. The touch rate of 720 Hz, on the other hand, suggests gaming use.

The display covers the DCI-P3 color space completely and offers a color depth of 10 bits. The maximum brightness is 700 nits, while the contrast ratio is specified at 1,000,000:1.

Both gaming smartphones also feature “Magic GPU image enhancement” and “Magic Write”, which is supposed to enable ultra-fast data reading and writing. In the announcement, Nubia talks about a 30 percent higher speed than with a competitor’s SSD.

In gaming, two 500 Hz shoulder triggers are also used for operation, while a Game Boost Switch button complete with Game Space boosts performance and offers various tuning options for the smartphone.

Cameras and Battery

Here, the standard model offers narrow display edges on the top and bottom, where the selfie cam has also been placed. On the back, Nubia installs a triple-camera setup consisting of a 64-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and a 2-megapixel macro lens.

The Redmagic 7 is equipped with a 4,500 mAh battery that can be fast-charged with up to 120 watts. The manufacturer even includes a 165-watt fast charger in the packaging for both the normal and the Pro model. With that, the smartphone is fully charged in just 17 minutes.

Redmagic 7 Pro with exciting features

In some areas, the Redmagic 7 Pro offers the same specifications as its cheaper brother, and yet the Pro model comes up with some exciting unique selling points. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the rear-facing cameras are shared by both models, but there are differences in the display.

The Pro only offers a frame rate of 120 Hz, but it has a touch sampling rate of 960 Hz. The lower frame rate is partly due to the under-display camera, which enables a borderless design. The maximum brightness of 600 nits is also slightly below the standard model.

The Redmagic 7 Pro also gains in terms of battery and comes with a capacity of 5,000 mAh, with a charging power of 135 watts. Thus, the gaming smartphone is fully charged again in just 15 minutes.

Red Core 1 gaming chip

Another new feature that the Redmagic 7 Pro has ahead of the normal version is the dedicated Red Core 1 gaming chip, which has already been leaked recently. It is supposed to further improve the gaming experience with four core features.

On the one hand, the chip improves the responsiveness of shoulder buttons and touch inputs, while on the other hand it provides unique vibration feedback, game-specific lighting effects and an improvement in sound effects.

Prices and Availability

The Nubia Redmagic 7 will be available for purchase in Dark Knight and Cyber Neon colors, as well as a special Transparent Edition (“Deuterium Transparent Version”). The price starts at 3,999 yuan, which is equivalent to about 558 euros. The transparent version with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB system memory is priced at 683 Euros.

The Redmagic 7 Pro, on the other hand, starts at 4,799 yuan (about 670 euro) in the colors Cybern Neon, Polar Black Night and Deuterium Blade Transparent. The Deuterium Blade Transparent variant with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of ROM is priced at around 740 euros, while the transparent top model with 18 GB of RAM and 1 TB of system memory is priced at 7499 yuan (around 1047 euros). Both smartphones are already available in China, whereas the global launch is scheduled for mid-March 2022.
