ROG Azoth 96 HE: Premium reverb effect keyboard with 96% layout and 8,000 Hz

With the ROG Azoth 96 HE, ASUS Republic of Gamers presents a new high-end gaming keyboard that combines analog Hall-effect switches, a compact 96% layout with numeric keypad and a true sampling rate of up to 8,000 Hz. The keyboard is aimed at demanding gamers and enthusiasts who expect maximum precision, keystroke flexibility and modern features such as an OLED touchscreen, tri-mode connectivity and extensive damping technology. At the same time, the design remains clearly anchored in the premium segment thanks to metal toplates and eye-catching ROG details.

  • 96% layout with numeric keypad for more functionality in a compact design.
  • Hot-swappable ROG HFX V2 magnetic switches with adjustable trigger point from 0.1 to 3.5 mm and Rapid Trigger.
  • ROG SpeedNova 8K (2.4 GHz), USB cable and Bluetooth with up to five paired devices, each with true 8,000 Hz sampling rate in wireless and wired modes.
  • 1.47-inch full-color OLED touchscreen with three-way rotary knob plus six-layer cushioning (Gasket Mount, PORON, IXPE, silicone) for a quiet, muted typing experience.

Hall-effect technology and precise rapid trigger control

At the heart of the ROG Azoth 96 U are the new ROG HFX V2 magnetic switches, which replace the use of classic mechanical contact blades with Hall Effect technology. Instead of a fixed switching point, a Hall sensor continuously detects the position of the plunger, allowing the trigger point to be freely adjusted between 0.1 and 3.5 mm – in fine increments of 0.01 mm. Enthusiasts can thus define exactly when inputs should be registered for each button, which is particularly advantageous in fast-paced shooters or precision games.

For additional consistency, each keyboard is subjected to a multi-stage calibration at the factory, in which the entire travel distance of each key is measured and stored in the controller. This data flows into the algorithm that controls the rapid trigger function: Unlike conventional mechanical switches, the key does not have to return to the reset point, but triggers again at the slightest spring-back. In combination with the high magnetic flux tolerance of the ROG HFX V2 switches and the direct placement of the IC close to the magnet, this enables very precise, low-latency input with minimal tolerances.

In addition, the switches are hot-swappable, meaning that the layout, switch characteristics or individual defective buttons can be replaced without soldering if necessary. According to the product pages, it is an analog gaming keyboard, which enables analog input levels in addition to classic on/off detection – for example for finely dosed movements in supported games. All in all, this results in a package that seems plausible and consistent for both competitive gaming and keyboard enthusiasts.

96% layout, tri-mode connectivity and 8,000 Hz

The 96% layout of the Azoth 96 HE combines the advantages of a compact tenkeyless keyboard with the functionality of a numeric keypad. The narrower arrangement of the keys and a nested layout means that the width remains significantly smaller than on classic full-size keyboards, while the numpad, arrow keys and function keys are retained – an approach that has long been established in the enthusiast sector and is transferred here to a gaming flagship.

When it comes to connectivity, ASUS relies on three modes: ROG SpeedNova 8K in the 2.4 GHz band, wired USB-C and Bluetooth, which can manage up to five devices simultaneously. Particularly striking is the true sampling rate of 8,000 Hz, which is offered in both wireless and wired mode without the need for additional booster accessories – a function that was only available on previous ROG models with a separate polling rate booster. As a result, the Azoth 96 HE reduces input lag significantly below the level of classic 1,000 Hz keyboards, which is particularly attractive for e-sports-oriented titles and precise counter-striking movements.

Another detail is the so-called Zone Mode, in which important gaming keys (e.g. WASD, Space, Modifier) are automatically set to 8,000 Hz, while less critical keys work with lower polling to save energy. This fine gradation per key complements the per-key actuation settings and thus adapts to different scenarios. Given the technical requirements of the wireless stack and the parallel analog scanning, this combination of 96% layout, reverb effect and 8,000 Hz wireless functionality seems coherent and plausible overall.

OLED touchscreen, attenuation and design

A 1.47-inch full-color OLED touchscreen sits in the upper right area, which displays keyboard and system information such as profile, mode, battery or effects and is visually based on the flagship Azoth Extreme. Paired with a three-way rotary knob, settings such as trigger point, trigger sensitivity, volume, lighting or profile change can be configured directly on the device – without having to go through software. This fits in with the aim of offering an enthusiast platform that can be adjusted on the fly, even while the game is running.

For the typing feel, ROG relies on a gasket-mount design with a total of six damping layers: four PORON layers, an IXPE pad and a silicone pad. This multi-layer design is intended to absorb vibrations and “ping” noises from the switches in a targeted manner and thus reproduce the muted, rich sound typical of custom keyboards. The hardness of the gasket mount can be adjusted by changing the lower damping layers, offering enthusiasts additional fine-tuning. This is complemented by a metal finish on the top cover that wraps visually around the chassis, giving the keyboard a premium, “clean” look; optional translucent ROG keycaps allow for customized accents.

The other specifications are also in the expected high-end segment: 96% format with dimensions of around 382 × 136 × 42 mm and a weight of around 1.3 kg, wireless rechargeable via an integrated lithium battery, RGB lighting with Aura RGB support, N-key rollover, anti-ghosting and extensive macro programming. In price comparisons, the keyboard is also explicitly listed as a wireless gaming keyboard with OLED display, USB nano-receiver and palm rest, which further underpins its positioning as a premium product for enthusiasts.

Price, availability and classification

According to German press releases and partner websites, the ROG Azoth 96 HE is available immediately in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The recommended retail price is 399 euros or 399 CHF including VAT, initially exclusively at launch partner Cyberport and from January onwards also at other specialist and online retailers. Initial price comparisons already list the model at street prices well above the RRP, which is typical for new products with limited availability in the enthusiast segment.

In view of the combination of Hall Effect technology, 8,000 Hz polling in wireless and wired mode, 96% layout, OLED touchscreen and elaborate damping, the ROG Azoth 96 HE is plausibly at the top of current gaming keyboards. The high entry-level price clearly positions it in the enthusiast and e-sports-oriented segment, but offers a package that is consistently implemented both technically and from the perspective of modern custom keyboard trends. If you are prepared to make the investment, you will receive one of the most feature-rich and future-proof gaming keyboards currently on the market.
