ROG Strix 5K XG27JCG: 5K gaming with high pixel density and 180 Hz

The ROG Strix 5K XG27JCG uses a 27-inch Fast IPS panel with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 pixels. This corresponds to a pixel density of 218 ppi and ensures particularly sharp displays – both in gaming and for productive applications. According to the manufacturer, the 5K panel offers up to 77% more screen area compared to a classic 4K monitor of a similar size. This opens up additional scope for detailed HUD elements, larger fields of view and multitasking.

With a refresh rate of 180 Hz (overclocked) and a response time of 0.3 ms (gray to gray), the monitor is clearly geared towards gaming despite its high resolution. The VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification also promises strong contrasts and improved peak brightness, which is particularly noticeable with HDR content and modern AAA titles.

Smooth image output is ensured by AMD FreeSync Premium and NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility, which supports variable frame rates (VRR) as standard. This is complemented by ELMB Sync and the enhanced Extreme Low Motion Blur 2 (ELMB 2) technology with dual backlight design and ten backlight zones. According to ASUS, ELMB 2 is designed to increase brightness by up to 65% compared to similar solutions while significantly reducing motion blur. In combination with ASUS Variable Overdrive, the monitor automatically adjusts its overdrive settings to the respective frame rate.

Dual mode, 330 Hz and AI features for competitive gaming

A key feature of the ROG Strix 5K XG27JCG is the integrated dual mode. The monitor can be switched between native 5K mode at 180 Hz and QHD mode at up to 330 Hz. This makes the monitor flexible: while 5K@180 Hz is predestined for detailed single-player games and media consumption, QHD@330 Hz offers maximum response speed for eSports titles.

For tournament scenarios, a 24.5-inch display option with FHD resolution can also be activated, also with up to 330 Hz. This setting is based on common eSports formats and ensures a familiar field of vision for competitive matches.

ASUS also offers numerous optimizations on the software side. Functions such as Dynamic Crosshair, Dynamic Shadow Boost and AI Visual use AI-supported adjustments to improve contrast, visibility of dark areas and target detection. The DisplayWidget Center allows all settings to be made conveniently using the mouse and keyboard – under both Windows and macOS. Even brightness control via keyboard shortcuts on compatible MacBooks is supported.

The combination of 5K resolution, high refresh rate and dual mode seems technically demanding, but plausible, as modern DisplayPort standards and powerful GPUs enable corresponding bandwidths.

Conclusion

With the ROG Strix 5K XG27JCG, ASUS is launching a versatile 5K gaming monitor that combines high resolution and extreme refresh rates. 5K@180 Hz, QHD@330 Hz, 0.3 ms response time and modern motion blur technologies make it ideal for immersive AAA titles as well as eSports scenarios. The monitor is now available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland at an RRP of 799.90 euros or CHF incl. VAT.
