RTL secures exclusive rights to HBO series

RTL is gearing up. As has now become known, the media company has landed a big fish. Content from WarnerMedia and HBO series will soon be available exclusively on the channel and its streaming service RTL+.

A worthwhile deal

For some time now, it has been clear that a lot has happened at the top of the media group RTL. The change of boss has not only led to some dismissals of once controversial “regular presenters” such as Dieter Bohlen at the broadcaster itself. The company is now also devoting more attention to on-demand television. Since the former TV Now media library was renamed RTL+, it now not only contains TV content from channels like RTL, VOX and RTL2. On top of that, you can now watch series and movies from third-party producers here. As has now become known, however, the media company seems to want to go one step further. It has landed a gigantic deal with a well-known US media group. Soon, users of RTL+ and viewers of the traditional TV channel will be able to enjoy series and films from the WarnerMedia Group. Likewise, HBO’s popular series are to be available for viewing.

“Numerous new HBO Max series” in the future on RTL+

RTL itself officially announced the bagged deal last Wednesday. In doing so, those responsible spoke of the fact that the channel’s programming lineup will be significantly broader. In particular, films and series from the WarnerMedia Group are to premiere on the streaming service. The contract partner also had nothing but positive things to say about the deal, which is certainly worthwhile for both sides. But what exactly does the purchase of the rights by RTL entail? The manager of the WarnerMedia Group, Sylvia Rothblum, said that the deal includes “numerous new HBO Max series” that RTL will henceforth show exclusively on its own streaming service and/or on free TV.

Sky gets competition

Should you be one of the few people out there who can’t do anything with “HBO”, then we want to give you an understanding of what this production company means. Iconic series such as “The Sopranos”, “The Wire” and of course “Game of Thrones” have been created in the US-American company. These have laid the foundation for the quality of today’s series. In particular, RTL is thus taking its streaming service, which was once rather tiredly ridiculed, to a whole new level. But that’s not all. On top of that, a well-known provider called “Sky” is getting some mighty competition. After all, Sky previously held the exclusive rights in Germany for the premiere of new HBO series. Possibly, this could be the first signs of HBO turning away from Sky.

Alternative to HBO Max?

The deal could make it very easy for HBO in Germany. Instead of launching its own streaming service “HBO Max,” the company is selling the rights to RTL without further ado. Since the provider has always done very well with this approach with Sky, nothing is likely to change in the near future. However, it is becoming increasingly questionable how long we will continue to see the high-quality series productions on Sky. After all, it has become known that the English media group is already flirting with other partners. In particular, a collaboration with Paramount+ has been discussed internally for some time. So why should the company still hold on to HBO content?
