Apple is supposed to launch its new mixed reality headset in 2022. According to current rumors, we can expect an extremely powerful device that is equipped with two processors. A 96-watt power supply is supposed to supply the VR/AR headset with power via USB Type-C.
New rumors about the Apple Mixed Reality headset
Respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has once again spoken out about Apple’s planned Mixed Reality headset, asserting once again that the VR/AR device will be equipped with a full two processors, which speaks to a huge amount of hardware power.
One of them is said to be manufactured by chip manufacturer TSMC in a 4 nm format, while the other continues to rely on 5 nm. This is reported by MacRumors with reference to Kuo. According to Kuo, the more powerful of the two chips should offer roughly the same performance as Apple’s M1 chip, which is used in the current MacBook Air, for example.
Autonomous use
This chip is mainly used for rendering image data and running apps, Kuo added. Due to the high performance of the main chip, the Apple Mixed Reality headset should be able to be used completely autonomously, i.e. without a connection to the iPhone or Mac.
The second processor, on the other hand, is much more energy-efficient. It will primarily be used for the headset’s sensors. Apple’s headset is supposed to offer an “innovative experience” and enable a seamless switch between VR and AR operation. Furthermore, Kuo predicts that Apple’s mixed reality headset should be two to three years ahead of its competitors in terms of performance from a technical perspective.
96-Watt Power Supply
To supply the Mixed Reality headset with the necessary power, Apple is said to rely on a 96-watt USB-C power adapter. This is supposed to be the same model that is currently already used in the MacBook Pro notebook top model.
Introduction in the fourth quarter of 2022
Kuo further assumes that the Apple Mixed Reality headset will be presented to the public in the fourth quarter of 2022. The worldwide delivery should then take place at the beginning of 2023. According to the hardware, the VR/AR headset will probably not be very cheap, though.
