Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra presented: All info on the giant flagship

Besides the S22 and S22+, the high-end flagship of the Koreans, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, was finally officially unveiled. As was rumored before, Samsung bridges the gap to the popular, but discontinued, Galaxy Note series here, because the S Pen is directly integrated into the case. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra combines the best of two Samsung smartphone worlds: the well-known versatility of the Note series and the impressive camera and performance of the S series. Equipped with integrated S Pen, new Nightography and video features, and a battery that lasts longer than a day, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the most powerful S-series device Samsung has ever built.

In Europe, the smartphone comes with Samsung’s specially developed Exynos 2200 chipset, which is manufactured in a structure width of 4 nanometers and comes with a Radeon GPU from AMD including ray tracing. Above all, the AI unit increases noticeably in terms of speed and is supposed to work twice as fast as in the case of the predecessor Exynos 2100.

Depending on the model, 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM are offered. The system memory is 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB. A Galaxy S22 Ultra with 1 TB of internal storage is also offered exclusively in Samsung’s online store. However, the storage is once again not expandable. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with Android 12 and Samsung’s latest One UI 4 interface.

Combined with Wi-Fi 6E, which is up to twice as fast (compared to Wi-Fi 6), the processor can further improve the performance of frequently used apps when gaming, streaming or working. Other features include 5G, NFC and Bluetooth 5.2.

A huge smartphone

The adaptive Dynamic AMOLED display measures 6.8 inches (17.31 cm) and is brighter than its predecessors with a peak brightness of 1,750 nits. A QHD+ resolution is offered, as well as a dynamic refresh rate that adjusts the image between 1 Hz and 120 Hz.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s screen also intelligently adjusts to different light conditions throughout the day so that content remains clearly visible even in sunlight.

At the same time, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra weighs 229 grams and is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery that is supposed to last for more than a day. The S22 Ultra also supports a super-fast 45 W fast-charging function, which provides enough energy for several hours of use after a short charging time. However, the corresponding fast charging adapter has to be purchased as an option.

The most powerful smartphone in the Samsung Galaxy S series so far

For the first time, the popular S Pen is integrated in an S-series device. It is also the most responsive S Pen Samsung has ever built. With 70 percent reduced latency, writing and drawing on the S22 Ultra’s large display is nearly natural and fluid, as is navigating apps intuitively.

With seamlessly integrated camera lenses and a slim metal frame that provides a symmetrical exterior, the Galaxy S22 Ultra represents a premium smartphone experience. The Glass and Haze finish adds an elegant touch to the S22 Ultra’s redesigned stringent, flowing appearance – complemented by the Galaxy Note’s iconic sharp corners.

An aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back also stand for an extremely robust smartphone that is also IP68 certified and thus protected against water and dust.

Impressive cameras in the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The camera setup of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also turns out to be particularly impressive, which is clearly superior to that of the S22 and S22+. A 108-megapixel sensor (f/1.8) is used as the main camera, which captures light with pixels as small as 2.4µm. Light and image information are thus captured to a high extent and illumination as well as detail accuracy of photos and videos are adjusted.

The main camera is complemented by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle (f/2.2) and two telephoto lenses with 3x (f/2.4) and 10x (f/4.9) optical zoom (10 megapixels each). A 40-megapixel selfie cam with an aperture of f/2.2 is found on the front.

The revised Auto Framing ensures that the camera always captures what the user has in front of the lens, especially in portrait and group shots, regardless of whether it is one or ten people.

At the same time, the cameras also prove to be extremely variant. Like the Galaxy S22 and S22+, the Galaxy S22 Ultra offers access to the Expert RAW app, with a wide range of editing tools. With the option to save photos in RAW format with up to 16 bits, images offer significantly more reserves than in the conventional JPG format. And just like a DSLR camera, photos can be fully customized with settings such as ISO number, shutter speed, white balance and manual/automatic focus.

Prices and availability

However, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is, unsurprisingly, by no means a bargain. The smartphone will be available in stores from February 25, starting at an MSRP of 1,249 euros for the model with 128 GB of internal storage.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G 256 GB is priced at 1,349 euros, and an additional 100 euros is called for doubling the storage to 512 GB (1,449 euros). The top model with 1 TB storage is exclusively available in Samsung’s online store and is priced at 1,649 Euros. The smartphone is available in the four colors Burgundy, Green, Phantom Black, and Phantom White, as well as in Graphite, Sky Blue, and Red exclusively from Samsung.
