Samsung introduces in-house CPU with exciting AMD graphics unit

Samsung has unveiled its upcoming processor technology for its smartphones. And it seems to have a lot to offer. The Exynos 2200 system-on-chip (SoC) has not only perfected the ARMv9 CPU. On top of that, the South Koreans combine it with an AMD GPU, which is supposed to be surprisingly frugal.

A challenge to Qualcomm?

In the smartphone world of Android devices, the first iPhone with an m1 chip on board is most certainly expected with trepidation. When this will be is still up in the stars. However, it is certain that Samsung is now a manufacturer that is taking the plunge. With Exynos 2200, the electronics company brings a heavily revised CPU solution under the hood of its upcoming flagships. And it really sounds promising. The processor is supposed to be based on the ARMv9 instruction set.

Its performance and composition can best be compared with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Thus, it undoubtedly belongs to the non-plus-ultra in terms of current processor technology. In addition to the composition, the manufacturing method also matches that of Qualcomm. Both SoCs are manufactured in the 4 nm process. However, first benchmark results see slight advantages on the side of Qualcomm’s new premium CPU so far.

Impressive graphics unit

However, one should by no means dwell too long on the similarities between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Samsung’s Exynos 2200. Much more exciting is the graphics unit that the South Koreans rely on. Samsung has secured an exclusive license from the graphics card and CPU manufacturer AMD. So far, we only know the RDNA-2-based architecture used here from Radeon RX 6000 GPUs and the chipsets of current consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Samsung seems to want to start a real gaming offensive in the smartphone market. Not without reason, the company talks about an “ultimate smartphone gaming experience” in a press release.

A lot of fine-tuning

Apart from that, Samsung seems to have tightened the screws in the most different places of the processor. For example, the Exynos 2200 is said to not only have a more powerful NPU, but also a revamped image processor. The South Koreans also want to integrate the latest mobile standard in the form of 5G directly into the CPU. It will probably not be long before we can get our hands on a Samsung device with a corresponding in-house CPU for the first time. Since the chip is already in mass production according to Samsung, we assume a premiere in the upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S22.
