Samsung Odyssey Ark: 55-inch curved gaming screen launches

With the Samsung Odyssey Ark, the manufacturer from South Korea has introduced its new display flagship for gamers about two months after the Odyssey Neo G8. It’s a 55-inch curved gaming screen complete with surround sound that packs a punch.

The Samsung Odyssey Ark in detail

A home theater-level gaming experience is promised by the new Samsung Odyssey Ark. This is a gaming screen with mini-LED VA panel that comes to an impressive size of 55 inches and features 1000R curvature for added immersion.

With Samsung’s Quantum Matrix technology and built-in Quantum Mini LEDs, precise control of each LED is achieved. Together with the newly developed 14-bit LED control, a full 16,384 different gradations of black tones should be able to be displayed.

The Odyssey Ark offers a static contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and should be able to display even the smallest details. A 4K resolution, a refresh rate of 165 Hz and a response time of only one millisecond are also offered. HDR10+ is also supported, while the typical brightness is 600 nits.

The built-in Samsung Neural Quantum Processor Ultra uses data from 20 neural networks to realize a high playback level at all times. The matte display surface protects against glare and reflections. AMD FreeSync Premium Pro is also part of the package.

Gaming Hub and Sound

The Samsung Odyssey Ark – like current smart TV models from Samsung – has the Gaming Hub on board. The streaming platform gives gamers access to fully loaded game libraries from partners like Xbox, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Google Stadia and Amazon Luna.

Streaming apps from well-known providers are also available. Among them are YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

The new Sound Dome technology creates a surround sound experience with an AI-supported sound booster and Dolby Atmos support. One speaker in each corner of the screen and two central woofers provide realistic and rich sound. The 60-watt 2.2.2 system can even handle deep bass tones up to a frequency of 45 Hz.

In terms of ports, a full four times HDMI, two times USB 2.0 and a 3.5 mm jack are available. Bluetooth 5.2 is supported for wireless communication as well as Wi-Fi 5.

Tizen is used as the operating system, while Samsung’s voice assistant Bixby and its own smart home solution SmartThings are also supported. The latter, after all, will soon receivea major update that will bring Philips Hue Sync support, among other things.

Ergonomics and operation

The display can be rotated via the flexible stand and can also be used in portrait mode thanks to the pivot function. In addition, the screen can be rotated, tilted and swiveled. Thanks to the HAS (Height Adjustable Stand) function, the height can also be adjusted individually. The screen size, position and even the aspect ratio should also be easy to adjust.

The Odyssey Ark is operated using the Ark Dial, a new, solar-powered remote controller. It can be used to adjust settings quickly and easily. This includes the Flex Move Screen, Multi View, Quick Settings and Game Bar functions.

Flex Move Screen allows free adjustment of the screen size between 55 inches and 27 inches. The position and screen ratio can also be configured between 16:9, 21:9 and 32:9 – all with just one touch of the Ark Dial.

Thanks to Multi View, up to four different screen contents can be displayed next to each other in horizontal mode, while up to three screen windows can be displayed on top of each other in vertical cockpit mode.

With the help of the Game Bar, important settings can be made without having to leave the game screen. From checking FPS (Frames Per Second), HDR (High Dynamic Range) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) to adjusting settings like screen ratio, response time and game mode. The Ark Dial does not need batteries. In addition to the solar panel, it can optionally be charged via a USB-C port.

Prices and Availability

The Samsung Odyssey Ark can be pre-ordered from August 24, 2022. The manufacturer does not currently name a price. On the German product website you can once again find all information about the gaming screen.
