Social media platform Reddit launches branch in Germany

Whether as a news source, forum, or for data exchange: Reddit is one of the most important social media platforms par excellence, especially in the gaming and technology sectors. Now the San Francisco-based company is expanding to Germany. It plans to launch a branch office in Berlin in the near future.

Reddit comes to Germany

Reddit is one of the 20 most visited websites in the world. Interest in the social media platform is growing steadily. No wonder that the company, which was founded in 2005 in Medford, Massachusetts and has since moved its headquarters to San Francisco, also wants to open up new markets.

To this end, it will soon be opening a new branch office in Berlin. CEO Steve Huffman, one of the founders of Reddit, sees Germany as a key location. Especially in the most important, non-English-speaking market, the company wants to grow quickly in the future.

In the early summer of 2021, the company had already opened its own branches in Australia and Canada, and is now expanding into Germany, the first non-English-speaking country. Tariq Mahmoud, Head of International at Reddit, will head the new division in Berlin.

Reddit is growing rapidly in Germany

In an interview, officials revealed that the Reddit platform in Germany saw user growth of 47 percent in 2020. This puts it in fifth place in terms of user base. They say they want to leverage and further expand this potential with their own branch office in Berlin.

Half a dozen new employees have already been hired for the new office in Berlin Mitte, Reddit adds. However, not all employees will focus purely on the German market.

The office is currently still under construction, and it is unclear exactly when Reddit will begin operations in Germany. There are currently more than 50 million users worldwide in over 100,000 sub-forums, the so-called sub-Reddits.
