Sony Honda Mobility: First e-car to be launched in 2026

Sony Honda Mobility’s plans are now slowly taking shape. For example, the joint venture consisting of tech company and carmaker has announced that its in-house electric cars are set to make their debut in the U.S. and Japan – but not for a few years yet.

We’ll have to wait a few more years

When Sony and Honda announced their creation of Sony Honda Mobility in June 2022, it was truly sensational. After all, both corporations are considered true experts in their respective disciplines. The car world is all the more eager to see what Sony Honda Mobility will bring to fans of electric mobility. However, we still have to be a little patient. The first vehicles are not expected to roll over the roads for a few years. Nevertheless, the joint venture has now announced further information. The electric car is supposed to be in the upper class segment. At least this is what the news portal Reuters has now publicly announced. The first vehicles are then to be handed over to customers in 2026. However, for the time being only in the United States and Japan.

Sony Honda Mobility: Perfect symbiosis of technology and car?

Unfortunately, you can count on one hand what information is known so far about the upcoming electric car. The report from Reuters makes us a little smarter in this regard. For example, it reveals how Sony Honda Mobility intends to set itself apart from the now widely diversified electric mobility market. The first model of the two Japanese companies is supposed to resemble a smartphone on wheels in terms of functionality. This raises hopes for cool features and catchy controls.

In order to give the driver and passengers a smartphone feel, Sony wants to rely on its own experience. Thus, the tech company wants to take on the development of a suitable software. The focus here is not only on catchy operation. On top of that, the company wants to use its own services for entertainment – PlayStation says hello. Considering that autonomous driving is becoming increasingly important, the plans sound quite promising. For example, you could pass the time of a long-distance drive with video games or a movie.

Sony wants to offer its services with corresponding subscription models. This not only sounds practical for the user, but also like a promising business model for Sony. After all, subscriptions guarantee a regular income for the Japanese company. The plan behind it has probably been well thought out at Sony for years. After all, the Japanese corporation announced its plans for the first electric car with the Vision-S at CES back in January 2020.

Sony also supplies sensors

But the tech company, which so far we know more from consumer electronics such as smartphones, game consoles and TVs, is not only concerned with software and matching services. It also wants to support Honda when it comes to hardware. The sophisticated sensors needed for autonomous driving in particular require a lot of work. Sony has no problem with this, in addition to supplying other technology. The Vision-S 01 and 02 should then offer Level 3 autonomous driving. We are curious about further information about the first electric car from Sony Honda Mobility and will keep you up to date.
