Sony in-ear headphones get Bluetooth multipoint, new version of LinkBuds S

The Sony WF-1000XM4 in-ear headphones are still considered the benchmark in the TWS segment, even though they were released in June 2021. However, the ANC kings still lacked one important feature: Bluetooth Multipoint. However, pairing with two devices at the same time will now still follow in winter 2022 via software update. The LinkBuds S (our review) and the original LinkBuds will also receive the feature via update.

Sony in-ear headphones get Multipoint via update

Sound-wise and in terms of active noise cancellation, Sony’s WF-1000XM4 in-ear headphones are still considered the benchmark in true wireless despite their advanced age.

The feature list of the Earbuds (currently 199.00 Euros at Amazon), which have meanwhile dropped significantly in price, is long. However, the earphones lacked an important function, because they did not offer Bluetooth Multipoint. The manufacturer will soon provide the option to pair the in-ears with two devices at the same time via Bluetooth with a free software update, as Sony revealed in a press release.

Bluetooth Multipoint makes it possible, for example, to listen to music on the PC and make calls via the smartphone at the same time. The headphones automatically switch back and forth between the two sources.

The particularly lightweight and also convincing Sony LinkBuds S and the original LinkBuds receive the update already in November 2022, the top model WF-1000XM4, however, must still wait until an unspecified date “from this winter”.

.
Furthermore, Sony announces a new edition of the “lightest in-ear headphones in the world” in the form of the Sony LinkBuds S Earth Blue. Here, recycled granules extracted from plastic water bottles are used. 2 US dollars from the sales price of each LinkBuds S model are donated to activities for the protection of the oceans.

The result is a design with a chic blue marble look that looks a little different on each pair of headphones.“Sony developed this material in search of new design approaches, with the goal of expanding the uses of recycled materials from water bottles while benefiting from their adhesive properties,” the manufacturer said.

The new Sony LinkBuds S Earth Blue are expected to make their way into stores in November 2022, with the manufacturer’s MSRP at 199.99 euros. Experiences with the original LinkBuds S show, however, that you should perhaps wait a little with the purchase.

These also launched at this price in June 2022, but dropped significantly within a few weeks and currently only cost € 118.06 *.

Thereby, the in-ear headphones, which only weigh 4.8 grams per earbud, are absolutely worth the money and score with a high-resolution sound, good battery life and a convincing ANC mode:

With this, Sony delivers an excellent price-performance ratio and lets us give them a clear buy recommendation. The Sony Linkbuds S currently rank among the top 5 best in-ear headphones.

.
In the review, we had criticized the lack of multipoint in particular – this point of criticism will soon be a thing of the past. More details about the LinkBuds S can be found on the official product website of Sony.
