Spotify gets karaoke feature

What is already common practice at Amazon Music is now to be introduced at Spotify as well. With a kind of karaoke feature, the Swedish music streaming service wants to convince even more users from now on. In the process, song lyrics are to be displayed in real time.

Finally available globally

The new feature is not really a premiere of the Swedes. Rather, the company has already tested last year to see if a rollout would be worthwhile. Among those chosen by the streaming service were selected countries in Asia, India as well as South America. They served as model regions. Given the popularity of karaoke in these regions, this is quite understandable. Obviously, the test went well. After all, the feature is now to be introduced all over the world. Spotify announced the introduction of the real-time lyrics display in a blog entry.

Some details have already been revealed. The karaoke feature will be able to run on different devices. Of course, the smartphone apps for Android and iOS will be included. But the company also wants to be able to display the song lyrics on the desktop, compatible smart TVs and Amazon’s Fire TV products. Karaoke via Spotify should also be possible on the applications for PS4, PS5 and Xbox One in the future. Strangely enough, Spotify does not show Xbox Series X and S. Either this is a bug or compatibility for the two consoles is still to come.

Uncomplicated operation

To activate the new feature, all you have to do on smartphones is perform a simple upward swipe gesture. To do this, the device must be in playback mode. Until the update for the implementation of the new feature has arrived on all smartphones and other devices, it will probably take a few more days. If you want to use the lyrics feature on your PC, no swipe gesture is used. Instead, you click on an icon that depicts a microphone.

Premium account not necessary

Spotify doesn’t want to make its karaoke feature available only to paying premium customers. According to statements by the streaming service, all users should be able to enjoy it. Spotify apparently doesn’t just have karaoke games in mind when it comes to displaying the lyrics. It should also be possible to share the lyrics via Facebook, Instagram and the other usual social networks. A button for sharing will be introduced especially for this purpose.
