Steam Console: Valve allegedly plans its own home console

Rumors are currently circulating in the gaming community that Valve, the company behind the popular Steam gaming platform, is working on its own home console. This is said to compete directly with established systems such as PlayStation and Xbox. But how plausible is this speculation, and what features could the potential console offer?

Rumor mill:

  • Powerful hardware: Hints in the Steam Deck kernel point to the use of HDMI-CEC and a platform called AMD Lilac, suggesting higher performance than the current Steam Deck.
  • Integration of SteamOS: It is assumed that the new console will be equipped with Valve’s own SteamOS operating system, similar to the Steam Deck.
  • Possible release date: Some speculation points to an official announcement in 2025, possibly to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the original Steam Machines.

Hints of a home console from Valve

Current information comes from various sources, including leaks and code analysis. This emerges from a report by our colleagues at Insider Gaming. The speculations are based on data that could be read from the kernel of the Steam Deck (€ 449.95 *). Reddit user coolbho3k discovered changes in the Steam Deck kernel that indicate the use of HDMI-CEC by a new device.

This system is said to be based on a platform called AMD Lilac, for which benchmarks are already available. These benchmarks indicate a significantly higher performance than the current Steam Deck, with approximately twice the multicore performance and three times the graphics performance.

These indications suggest that Valve is working on a stationary system that is optimized for use on TV sets. The integration of HDMI-CEC supports this assumption, as this technology enables the control of devices via HDMI and thus facilitates seamless integration into the living room.

Possible features and specifications

According to rumors, the new console could be equipped with AMD hardware, in particular the “Lilac” board, which is said to offer performance comparable to current consoles. Accordingly, we can probably assume that graphics and performance will be on a par with PlayStation 5 (PS5 Slim: € 598.99 *; PS5 Pro: € 829.99 *) and Xbox Series X (€ 549.99 *) should be.

It is also speculated that the console will come with a new Steam Controller 2, which could feature improvements in ergonomics and functionality, for example by integrating trackpads for games that require mouse precision. A key point of the development is that this console will not be limited to playing exclusive titles.

Like the Steam Deck, it would be fully integrated into the Steam platform and allow access to the extensive catalog of PC games available in the store. There is even speculation that it could share features with the Steam Deck, such as the ability to run games remotely.

Classification and outlook

The indications are growing, but official confirmation is still pending. If Valve does indeed launch its own home console, this could stimulate competition in the console market and offer gamers another exciting option.
