Steam Machine

New indications suggest that the Steam Machine could be significantly more powerful than previously assumed. Instead of the originally expected limitations in image output, modern display features such as 4K at 120 Hz, HDR and VRR could be supported after all. This is based on current developments in AMD’s Linux drivers, which should enable full HDMI 2.1 support.

  • Support for 4K resolution with up to 120 Hz possible
  • HDMI 2.1 features such as VRR and ALLM on the horizon
  • New Linux drivers from AMD as a technical breakthrough
  • Potential upgrade via firmware conceivable

Steam Machine with HDMI 2.1: Technical breakthrough with new AMD drivers

The discussion surrounding the performance of the Steam Machine has gained new momentum thanks to recent developments. Until now, support for modern HDMI standards under Linux has been considered problematic, particularly due to license conditions that are not compatible with open source principles. This is precisely where AMD is now taking action: New kernel patches are to integrate features such as Fixed Rate Link (FRL) for the first time – a key technology of HDMI 2.1.

FRL enables significantly higher bandwidths of up to 48 Gbit/s. This makes it technically realistic to display content in 4K resolution at 120 Hz without having to resort to compression. This is particularly relevant for gaming, as compression is often associated with a loss of quality or additional latency. The development is considered plausible as AMD is actively working on improving its Linux drivers and corresponding progress has already been documented.

If the full implementation of HDMI 2.1 succeeds, the Steam Machine could benefit from functions such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). This dynamically adjusts the refresh rate to the actual frame rate and thus ensures a smoother gaming experience without tearing. In addition, the Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) could automatically activate the gaming mode of a display and reduce input lag.

More gaming comfort thanks to modern display features

The possible improvements go beyond pure resolution and frame rate. HDR support would ensure a significantly enhanced color representation and higher contrasts, which would bring visual advantages, especially in current games. In combination with VRR and high refresh rates, the result is an overall package that is clearly geared towards modern gaming standards.

The Steam Machine is currently still being advertised with HDMI 2.0. In this configuration, 4K at 120 Hz is only possible to a limited extent, for example due to reduced color depth or chroma subsampling. However, the new developments could remove these limitations. It is important to note that the underlying hardware must already be compatible – only then is an upgrade via software or firmware realistic.

Such an update scenario does not seem unlikely. In the past, similar functions have been subsequently activated on other devices. The market trend also shows that even compact gaming systems are increasingly relying on HDMI 2.1. This indicates that future generations of devices will also have to meet corresponding standards in order to remain competitive.

Conclusion: Steam Machine could perform significantly better than expected

The latest information on the Steam Machine paints a much more powerful picture than previously assumed. If the developments surrounding HDMI 2.1 support are confirmed, the system could offer modern gaming features such as 4K at 120 Hz, HDR and VRR.

These functions have not yet been officially confirmed, as they are leaks and early developments. Nevertheless, the technical advances at AMD seem plausible and could form the basis for a corresponding upgrade. Price and availability details remain to be seen.
