Steam Machine

The rumors surrounding Valve’s new Steam Machine continue to intensify. After hints about the price of the new Steam Controller have already surfaced, insiders are now expecting the release date and retail price of the mini PC to be announced soon. The recent memory shortage of SSDs and DDR5 RAM in particular is said to have made pricing significantly more difficult. However, Valve now appears to be close to a final decision.

  • Steam Machine release date to be announced soon, according to insiders
  • Internal price discussions due to high SSD and DDR5 RAM costs
  • Steam Controller apparently planned with an RRP of around 85 euros
  • Gaming performance with focus on 4K/60 FPS and Linux-based platform

Steam Machine is apparently close to the final price decision

According to reports from Insider Gaming, Valve is currently working intensively on the final pricing of the new Steam Machine. In particular, the question of whether the company would sell the device at a loss in the short term is said to have been discussed internally on several occasions. This is remarkable, as Valve had originally emphasized that the Steam Machine would not be subsidized like classic consoles.

Instead, the plan was to offer a system that is priced more like a gaming PC with comparable hardware, but at the same time brings the comfortable console experience into the living room. This is precisely where the challenge currently lies: since the launch in November 2025, the prices for mass storage and DDR5 memory have increased significantly. This development makes it more difficult to achieve an attractive price-performance ratio.

Fans had originally expected a market launch in early 2026. However, due to the ongoing component shortage, the timeframe has been pushed back to a more general release “sometime in 2026”. However, according to insider Mike Straw, Valve is now “getting close to confirming all the details”, which points to an official announcement in the near future.

Steam Machine to be positioned between console and gaming PC

Even if Valve avoids the term console, the comparison with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is obvious. The Steam Machine is designed to bring a large Steam library directly into the living room and is based on Linux. The system is supported by the new Steam Controller, whose two trackpads are specially optimized for PC games.

The recommended retail price of the controller is said to be around 85 euros. This already indicates that Valve wants to place the overall package in the premium segment. At the same time, the increased prices of the PS5 and especially the PS5 Pro make a higher entry price for the Steam Machine more understandable.

However, there are also technical discussions. Critics see the 8 GB VRAM in particular as a potential weak point for modern AAA titles. Games such as Pragmata or other current releases often require more graphics memory even at 1440p in order to display high details smoothly. Nevertheless, Valve promises that most games on the platform will run at 4K and 60 FPS – supported by upscaling based on an older FSR version.

It also remains to be seen whether the announced Frame VR headset will be released together with the Steam Machine or separately. This decision could also have an impact on the pricing strategy and launch date.

Conclusion

The Steam Machine could become an important hardware step for Valve in 2026. Between mini PC, living room console and Steam ecosystem, the device should appeal to a new target group. The biggest unanswered question remains the price: with the Steam Controller costing around 85 euros, there are many indications of a premium product. An official presentation of the release date and RRP should not be long in coming.
