Synology DiskStation DS1522+: Compact 5-bay storage solution unveiled

Synology DiskStation DS1522+ is the latest compact model in the Plus series of all-in-one storage solutions, offering five bays despite its comparatively small size. As a versatile network storage, the DS1522+ is also equipped with four 1GbE ports and even offers optional 10GbE connectivity.

Synology DiskStation DS1522+ in detail

The new model of the Plus series, the Synology DiskStation DS1522+, is suitable for business, and home users alike. Here, the manufacturer wants to launch a compact yet powerful network storage device that meets all requirements. It positions itself above the already available DS1520+.

“The DS1522+ is a versatile solution for a wide range of applications and environments,” said Peggy Weng, product manager at Synology Inc. “The new upgrade option to 10 GbE plus the expandability of 10 additional drives make the DS1522+ a cost-effective solution that can easily grow with any team.”

In the process, the DS1522+ offers space for up to five 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs. If that’s not enough, the capacity can even be increased to up to 15 drives with the help of two Synology DX517 expansion units. Up to 736 MB/s sequential read and 796 MB/s sequential write are possible.

In addition, the DiskStation can be easily upgraded when needed. Two integrated slots for M2. NVNMe SSDs and an optional 10GbE RJ-45 network upgrade module are also offered.

Various storage solution

Compact, the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ is all about the desktop format. Dimensions of 166 mm x 230 mm x 223 mm and a weight of 2.7 kg are on the books and allow for easy transport of the storage.

Inside, an AMD Ryzen R1600 dual-core CPU (4 threads) with 2.6 GHz traktate and a maximum boost of up to 3.1 GHz does its job, which is supported by 8 GB of DDR4 working memory. The SODIMM RAM can even be expanded by up to 32 GB if desired.

With the DiskStation Manager (DSM) 7.1 operating system, it also comes with robust and comprehensive features for data management, file sharing, collaboration and video surveillance.

Another benefit: Synology storage systems can be easily configured into a cross-platform private cloud. Synology Drive enables user-friendly file management and synchronization between different platforms such as Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.

Security comes first

The manufacturer has also thought about data security. For example, the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ offers the ability to automate backup, snapshots, and replication, so you don’t have to worry about backups anymore. Hyper Backup is also on board.

With Synology Active Backup Suite, IT infrastructure such as Windows systems, VMs running Hyper-V/VMware, and accounts in Microsoft 365/Google Workspace can be reliably backed up to the DS1522+ and restored when needed.

If something does get lost, data recovery can even be triggered at the file and folder level. Damaged files can also be detected and recovered thanks to mirrored metadata and RAID configurations.

Private Video Surveillance

Thanks to Synology Surveillance Station, the DS1522+ even becomes a powerful Network Video Recorder (NVR) with support for up to 40 IP cameras if desired, with only two licenses included for free.

Over 8,300 different camera models are supported, and the data is stored privately and without any subscription requirements. Access is available via web browser, desktop client or mobile apps, and you can even create event-based rules yourself, with optional email, SMS and push notifications.

Price and Availability

Synology DiskStation DS1522+ is available now from Synology resellers and partners. The manufacturer gives a 3-year warranty on the storage solution, which can even be optionally extended up to 5 years. Synology did not provide any pricing details.
