Synology DiskStation DS420j introduced

Synology has officially introduced the successor to the DiskStation DS418j. First shown at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the Synology DiskStation DS420j is visually identical to its predecessor. This comparatively inexpensive NAS was designed primarily for home users and small businesses. Four bays for 3.5-inch drives allow a maximum capacity of 64TB gross capacity, which is approximately 60TB of usable storage space after formatting.

The all-round data management solution has a new 4-core CPU (1.4 GHz) and 1 GB DDR memory. The memory is managed through the DiskStation Manager (DSM) web interface, already known from previous Synology products, which is also designed to provide “easy setup” of Synology Hybrid RAID. The DiskStation DS420j features a cloud service that allows data access via the Internet, as well as streaming function that can play videos, photos, and music on the TV.

External devices can be connected via LAN (1 Gbps) and two USB 3.0 ports. In the USA, the NAS is said to be slightly cheaper than its predecessor with an introductory price of 289 dollars. When and at what price the Synology DiskStation DS420j will be released in Germany was not yet announced at the show. However, technical details can already be found in the data sheet (PDF).
