Tesla builds two new factories in Nevada

Tesla fans have been waiting for the Semi Truck for quite some time. This is not because they want to take a seat at the wheel of the large-sized truck. Rather, the all-electric truck could also mark a turning point in the field of freight transport. In order to produce the semi truck in large numbers, the company has now announced plans to build two new plants in Nevada at once.

Lately, Tesla’s public relations have not really been going well. After all, negative headlines about unfavorable working conditions at the Gigafactory in Grünheide cast a dark shadow over the successful electric car manufacturer. On top of that, a leading software developer admitted to misleading publicity about the electric car fleet’s Autopilot. On top of that, a Tesla Model S has also been found to have been at fault in a mass pileup in the US in the fall of 2022. Despite the serious allegations, the company, led by controversial tech billionaire Elon Musk, continues to go about its business. Now it has announced that they want to build two new factories in the U.S. state of Nevada. Among other things, the long-awaited semi truck will finally go into production there. The company also wants to have the matching batteries manufactured there.

An enrichment for the structurally weak region

The construction of the new plants is not cheap, of course. Tesla is investing an impressive $3.6 billion in the construction, according to a blog post from the company. This by no means marks the automaker’s debut in the U.S. state. In 2016, Tesla inaugurated its Gigafactory there. It is therefore not surprising that the two new production halls are to be built in the immediate vicinity of the first Gigafactory. The region should also benefit from the large-scale expansion. Since Nevada is already considered a structurally weak area with high unemployment, the two factories will probably come at just the right time. Tesla wants to create a total of 3,000 jobs locally. Consequently, Tesla also calls its new building a “continuation of its investment in Nevada.”

Tesla wants to reduce production costs

Incidentally, the battery manufacturing plant will not only produce battery technology for the new semi truck. The rest of the electric car manufacturer’s fleet is also to be included in this. According to Tesla, this is not only intended to reduce production costs for its vehicles. On top of that, the new batteries should work more efficiently, which should ensure a longer range. For the time being, however, the company’s focus is probably still on the semi truck. This is expected to be on US roads as early as next year. A maximum range of 800 km sounds very ambitious. We are curious to see when the e-truck will also be available in Germany.
