Tesla: In China, 1.1 million cars need to be reworked

Chinese authorities have ordered Tesla to make improvements to a total of 1.1 million vehicles. However, this does not involve a classic recall, as the changes can be implemented via a software update. Affected are the models 3, Y, S and X, which were manufactured between 2019 and 2023.

Warning on acceleration

Chinese authorities criticize two aspects of the vehicles in particular. One of them is a lack of acceleration warning. Thus, they demand that such a warning be issued when the accelerator pedal is pressed for a certain period of time. This regulatory requirement is likely to go back to an accident in Guangdong province. There, a Tesla drove into a crowd of people without braking. After the accident, there was speculation about whether the driver of the vehicle had confused the gas pedal with the brake pedal. However, there is no evidence of such confusion. Tesla pointed out, for example, that the vehicle data showed that only one of the two pedals was pressed – which makes a mix-up seem unlikely, since the driver would have noticed the high speed sooner or later and, in the event of a mix-up, would probably have pressed the other pedal from that moment on. Technical problems seem more likely.

Nevertheless, Tesla vehicles in China will have to issue warnings from now on if the accelerator pedal is depressed for a longer period of time. This is to rule out possible confusion or mitigate its consequences.

Lower recuperation mode

The second arrangement aims to introduce a driving mode with lower recuperation. Until now, Tesla vehicles in China have been recuperating heavily. When the gas pedal is released, there is a deceleration that required a spirited step on the brake in a conventional vehicle. This limits the driving options with Tesla vehicles. Now a mode is to be retrofitted in which the deceleration is less. In the future, drivers will be able to choose between two deceleration modes.
