Tesla Model S and X Plaid: Infotainment system with AMD Ryzen CPU

The electric cars Tesla Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid rely on a comprehensive and powerful infotainment system. The teardown now shows that Tesla relies on an AMD Ryzen CPU with four cores. You can find out what other hardware is under the hood here.

The hardware in the Tesla Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid

Tesla relies on hardware from AMD to run the infotainment system in the current Plaid versions of both the Model S and Model X electric cars. That’s what tech youtuber Ingineerix has now found out, going into detail about the installed technology in a recent video.

The graphics card is particularly powerful. Tesla uses a current graphics card with a Navi-23 GPU and an FP32 computing power of around 10 TFlops. The processor, on the other hand, is not quite one of the current top models.

It bears the model number YE180FC3T4MFG and should thus belong to the AMD Ryzen Embedded V1807B from the first Zen generation. The characteristic metal frame around the chip as well as the elongated silicon chip hidden under the thermal paste also point to that.

Accordingly, the AMD processor relies on four Zen 1 cores with eight threads and also offers an integrated Vega graphics unit with up to 11 compute units or 704 shaders. AMD had already revealed in the summer of 2021 that said Vega unit would be used under low 3D loads. For 3D games, the Tesla Model S and X Plaid models would automatically switch to the Navi-32 graphics card.

Navi-32 GPU with 8 GBytes of GDDR6 RAM

Taking a closer look at the graphics unit, the inscription K4ZAF325BM of the four memory chips catches the eye. Thus, we are dealing with a total of 8 GBytes of the fast GDDR6 RAM.

Details about the memory bandwidth and speed, however, are unfortunately not visible. The installed working memory is also not specifically evident and therefore does not allow any conclusions. However, it is clear that the infotainment system in the Tesla Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid attracts attention with an excellent gaming performance.

It is therefore no wonder that the manufacturer advertises with the hit role-playing game The Witcher 3 from CD Projekt RED in its promotional photos – even today one of the most performance-hungry games on the market.
