Home office has established itself as a valid solution in many industries during the Corona pandemic and has proven more than once that productivity is not negatively affected when working at home. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, however, sees things differently, as leaked emails reveal. In them, he reintroduces a presence in the office for 40 hours a week and threatens to quit.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk threatens to quit
“Everyone who wants to work from home must be in the office at least (and I mean *at least*) 40 hours a week or leave Tesla,” with these clear words, eccentric workaholic Elon Musk addressed his employees in an email.
This and another message were leaked on the Internet. Further, Musk recalled that he himself had slept at the factory. Pointing out that the higher one’s position in the company, the more important the duty of presence becomes.
Musk also couldn’t resist a dig at other companies that still allow home offices and asked (rhetorically) when the last time was that other companies released innovative products.
Only in special cases would it be possible to continue working for Tesla from home. Corresponding applications would have to be submitted to Musk personally and approved by the South African.
This puts Tesla in stark contrast to other globally successful companies that continue to offer home offices for their employees. Apple, for example, had only recently relaxed the requirements after employees acknowledged the decision to return to the office by resigning.
On Twitter, where Musk usually records almost every step of his life, the CEO of Tesla remained silent about the leaked emails. It remains to be seen how employees will react to their boss’s threat and whether there will be similar protests within the company, as in the case of Apple.
