Tolino Epic 3: Tolino introduces new eBook reader

Tolino presents its latest eBook reader with the Epos 3. The device has an amazingly large internal memory and has been noticeably changed in several aspects compared to the predecessor.

E-paper touchscreen

Like its predecessor, the new Epic is equipped with an eight-inch e-paper touchscreen that offers a resolution of 300 DPI. The display also has a switchable backlight and a function that can be used to regulate the color temperature. Thus, the displayed content can be optimized for reading against the background of the respective environment. The color temperature can also be adjusted automatically. As with the Epos 2, there is no noticeable transition between the display and the casing’s edge.

The device meets the requirements of the IPX8 protection class. This means that it can be immersed in water for a short time without being damaged. Up to one hour in fresh water up to two meters deep is possible.

32 GB of storage and a lot of convenience

The differences to the predecessor model are particularly noticeable in the memory configuration. For example, the internal storage space has been increased from eight to 32 GB – and thus quadrupled. Even the Vision 6 presented in October 2021 cannot keep up here. The working memory has also been increased significantly: from 512 MB to one GB. The internal storage space of 32 GB is supplemented by 25 GB of storage space in the Tolino Cloud. Even without this, the space should be enough for up to 24,000 eBooks, making the Epos 3 one of the eBook readers with the largest capacity.

However, not only the enormous storage space offers comfort, but also the scroll buttons in the area of the grip bar as well as the rotation function of the display. When the reader is turned, a rotation symbol appears. This has to be pressed to change the display. This is to avoid unwanted rotations that could disturb the reading process. For the same reason, the power button is not on the edge of the device, as is usual for tablets, but on the back. Accidental activation is thus almost impossible. This was not the case in the predecessor.

USB-C port and other features

Another new feature is the USB-C port on the Epic 3, which replaces the micro-USB port on the predecessor. The new model also supports dual-band WLAN. Tolino wants to enable downloads from its own and other stores. In addition to ePub formats with and without DRM, PDF and TXT files are supported. Online lending from public libraries is supported. Furthermore, the device is equipped with a browser that can be used to surf the Internet.

Price and Availability

Available is the eBook reader Epos 3 with immediate effect at all Tolino partners – including Hugendubel, Thalia, Libri, Osiander, Weltbild or Mayerschen. The price is 280 euros.
