Truth Social: Trump’s Twitter alternative is in trouble

Truth Social, the Twitter alternative launched by Donald Trump, appears to be a real flop. Among other things, the former U.S. president is said to owe a lot of money to his hoster.

Twitter alternative flops

Donald Trump abused his Twitter account during his term in office and shortly thereafter to make headlines with crude theories about alleged election fraud and the like, among other things. So it was all the more understandable when the short message service got around to blocking him on its own platform. The former US president did not want to put up with this. Without further ado, he launched his own Twitter in the form of Truth Social. But the platform apparently has major problems. The financial bottlenecks that Trump apparently has to put up with are said to be particularly serious. The Republican-affiliated Fox News has reported that Truth Social has not even been able to pay its hosting fees since March 2022. Already, this is said to have piled up $1.6 million in debt. Since the hoster does not want to put up with this, legal consequences now threaten.

Truth Social has big problems

Picking Rightforge as the hoster for Truth Social was apparently a smart move. So while the company has announced legal action against the online platform, management is still convinced by Trump’s plan. The latter promoted the platform as the only place for free expression of opinion. Incidentally, he himself should not have to worry too much about the debt. After all, he himself is unlikely to have invested his own capital in the project, and he also cleared his position on the board of directors at the parent company in July. And there’s another problem. For example, Trump and his fellow campaigners have failed miserably to have Truth Social protected as a trademark. Consequently, marketing is only possible to a limited extent. So it’s hardly surprising that membership growth occurs primarily when Trump is in the headlines again. This was the case just recently when the FBI investigated the ex-president’s estate in Florida. The extent to which freedom of expression on Trump’s Twitter alternative goes in such cases was also immediately apparent. Here it came probably to countless calls for violence against FBI officials.

Future of Truth Social is uncertain

Unlike on Twitter, Trump can now finally vent verbally on Truth Social without having to fear problems. This desire is apparently shared by other celebrities. Probably the best-known supporter of Truth Social is none other than Elon Musk. The tech visionary is rumored to be working on his own social network. But even though Trump enjoys fool’s license on his own platform, it apparently also has distinct disadvantages compared to Twitter. For example, the ex-president can now access only a fraction of his former followers. While almost 80 million users were able to see Trump’s posts on Twitter, there are said to be just 3.2 million people on Truth Social. As a result, the future of the platform is more than uncertain. After all, the low growth rate does not allow the platform to build a financial base. If this does not change, the Twitter alternative will probably soon be a thing of the past.
