Twitter: Blocking of third-party apps confirmed – This is the reasoning

Third-party apps for Twitter, such as Tweetbot, have suddenly stopped working for days now, and the rumor mill is bubbling. Also because Twitter did not officially comment on this. Now the Twitter developers have commented on the issue with a reason, which, however, leaves many questions unanswered.

Twitter blocks third-party apps

The social network Twitter is taking on increasingly idiosyncratic traits following its acquisition by Elon Musk. For just over a week, third-party apps such as the popular Tweetbot no longer allow updates and display nothing.

For a long time, there was speculation as to what the reason for this was. Meanwhile, Twitter developers provide the clear answer: third-party apps are being blocked: “Twitter is enforcing its long-standing API rules. This may result in some apps not working,” official sources say.

This makes it clear: other apps are undesirable and will be blocked. However, many questions remain unanswered. For example, what the API rules look like in the first place. It also remains unclear what the developers of the third-party apps can do to follow the API rules and get their programs working again.

Twitter also provides no indication as to why the app providers were not informed about the adjustment in advance. This is especially annoying since third-party apps have always been a part of Twitter.

Twitter takes increasingly curious turns

So the short messaging service is certainly not making any more friends, especially among developers. Twitter CEO Elon Musk does whatever he wants anyway. First he has critical journalists blocked and releases the accounts three days later.

Then he puts his resignation to a vote, but does not act on the result. Curious things are apparently also going on in the social network’s offices: since Christmas 2022, employees have apparently had to even bring their own toilet paper to work in order to save money.

Cleaning staff at Twitter’s New York office are also said to have been laid off, resulting in suitably unappealing office and washroom spaces. If you can hardly use Twitter in good conscience anymore, the social network is at least good for one or two dubious reports and smirks or headshakes.
