Ukraine war: Microsoft takes Windows downloads off the net in Russia

Russia’s devastating war of aggression against its neighbor Ukraine is still ongoing. In the meantime, it has led not only Western countries to initiate extensive sanctions against Putin’s regime. Western companies are also doing the same. Microsoft is one of them. After all, it has now become known that you can no longer download Windows 10 and Windows 11 in Russia in the classic way. The software and hardware giant from Redmond, USA, has unceremoniously blocked the download websites.

Windows ban for Russia

Currently, it is not possible to download Windows 10 or Windows 11 in Russia. Thus, in the meantime, several users have confirmed to the Russian news agency TASS that currently the websites are not accessible. There were first reports about this as early as June 19, 2022. Now, Russian users only have the option of using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). With this, Microsoft has followed its words with deeds. After all, the US company announced shortly after the start of the war of aggression against international law that it would no longer offer its products in Russia.

Now it seems to affect software as well as hardware. Russian users won’t like that at all. After all, Windows is by far the most used operating system in Russia as well. Although in the meantime even the expert for IT security Catalin Cimpanu verified on Twitter that many Russian users are trying in vain to download Windows 10 and Windows 11, a suitable statement from Microsoft is missing so far. We are curious to see if the company will comment on the blocked websites in the next few days. By the way, Microsoft now has its own VPN service with Microsoft Edge VPN. Maybe users Russians who want to get their hands on Windows 10 or Windows 11 will use it right away.
