Vivo X70 series: Innovative smartphones with Zeiss camera officially unveiled

Vivo has finally unveiled its own flagship smartphone series X70. With the X70, X70 Pro and X70 Pro+, the Chinese manufacturer has announced three exciting devices that want to score especially with a strong Zeiss camera.

Vivo X70 Pro+: Specifications & Features

Especially the top model Vivo X70 Pro+ sounds outstanding on paper and scores with top features and a fancy design. The 6.78-inch display with Samsung E5 AMOLED panel is strongly curved towards the sides and offers a resolution of 3,200 x 1,440 pixels. It offers a dynamic frame rate that is adjusted between 1 Hz and 120 Hz depending on the usage. Thus, the 20:9 format display has a pixel density of 517 ppi. The E5 panel is also supposed to work about 25% more efficiently than the E4 predecessor, which results in an increased battery runtime.

In terms of SoC, the Vivo X70 Pro+ relies on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ with 8 GB to 12 GB LPDDR5 working memory and 256 GB to 512 GB flash storage. The battery has a capacity of 4,500 mAh and can be charged quickly via USB-C with 55 watts. The smartphone also charges wirelessly with a maximum of 50 watts. The casing is also water-resistant according to the IP68 standard. Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6, Bluetooth version 5.2 and NFC are supported.

The smartphone measures 164.5 x 75.2 x 8.9 mm and weighs 213 grams. Android 11 is preinstalled as the operating system, which Vivo covers with the OriginOS 1.0 user interface.

Impressive camera setup

The back made of artificial leather is dominated by a gigantic camera module, which is split in two and stretches almost across the entire width: the lenses of the quad camera sit on the left, while a reflective surface is installed next to it on the right. This can be used to see the user’s face when taking selfies with the rear cameras – unlike Xiaomi, Vivo does not use a real display here.

However, the setup of the quad camera is all the more impressive: The main camera relies on the 50-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL GN1 sensor in a 1/1.31-inch format with a fast f/1.57 lens. In addition, there is a 12 megapixel f/1.6 portrait camera with Sony IMX663 sensor (focal length: 50 mm), a 48 MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 1/2 inch sensor and an angle of view of 114 degrees (including gimbal stabilization) as well as an 8 megapixel 125 mm periscope zoom camera.

All four cameras feature optical image stabilization and Zeiss T* coating, which is said to effectively reduce ghosting. The Vivo in-house developed imaging chip V1 is said to further improve image quality. Videos are recorded by the Vivo X70 Pro+ in a maximum of 8K at 30fps. A Gyro-EIS is used here, while HDR10+ is supported. On the front, the manufacturer installs a 32-megapixel camera (f/2.5, 1/2.8 sensor) that takes photos in a 26mm wide-angle format. Videos on the front are possible in a maximum of 4K with 30 fps.

Vivo X70 Pro and X70: slimmed down

Below the flagship are the Vivo X70 Pro and Vivo X70, which have to make do with less impressive specs. Both rely on a 6.56-inch, 120 Hz AMOLED display. The X70 Pro uses the Samsung Exynos 1080 SOC, whereas the base model relies on the cheaper MediaTek Dimensity 1200. The X70 Pro also relies on a laterally rounded display, whereas the X70 does not.

In terms of cameras, both models rely on a triple-cam setup that consists of a 50 MP main camera on the X70 Pro and 40 MP on the X70, as well as a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle and a 12 MP telephoto camera. The X70 Pro also has an 8 MP periscope camera with 5x optical zoom. Here, too, the built-in Vivo V1 chip optimizes the image quality in the background. The battery of the X70 Pro has a capacity of 4,500 mAh, while the X70 has to make do with 4,400 mAh. Both models are charged with a maximum of 44 watts.

Prices and availability

All three smartphones of the Vivo X70 series will initially be released exclusively in China at the beginning of October. The manufacturer has not yet revealed details about the global launch. Prices are the equivalent of around 721 Euros for the Vivo X70 Pro+, 564 Euros (X70 Pro) and 485 Euros (X70).
