Vodafone cable network: Expansion to up to 3 Gbit/s decided

The Vodafone cable network is being expanded. The company announced a cooperation with Altice to jointly drive the expansion of the fiber-optic network in Germany. Up to seven million households are thus expected to benefit from fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) over the next six years.

Vodafone cable network expansion brings higher speeds

After customers in Baden-Württemberg had to go without network reception for days due to a missed payment of the electricity bill on the part of Vodafone, there is now encouraging news again from Vodafone.

Together with Altice, the company is aiming to expand the Vodafone cable network. In addition to the expansion itself, the joint venture called “FibreCo” will also modernize the infrastructure of the largest cable network operator in Germany, according to the press release. The two companies each share 50 percent of FibreCo, but Altice is getting in at the start with a large sum to drive modernization and expansion.

Up to seven million households are expected to benefit from the new FTTH broadband network and higher speeds in the coming years. Around 80 percent of these are focused on buildings that are already integrated into Vodafone’s hybrid fiber-optic network, while the remaining 20 percent are to be newly connected.

In contrast to the Docsis standard for fiber optic connections, FTTH offers a clear advantage, because Fiber To The Home provides Internet via cable without taking a detour. The advantage is lower latencies and a more stable connection.

Higher speeds around Docsis standard

Furthermore, however, FibreCo also wants to increase speeds in the Docsis standard by adding even more node splits. This will mean that fewer households will have to share the fire bandwidth among themselves. The goal is to enable transmission speeds of up to 3 Gbit/s in the Cocsis 3.1 standard in the medium term.

With new technologies such as Docsis 4.0, it should even be possible to achieve download speeds of up to 10 Gbit per second via FibreCo’s hybrid fiber optic network.

The first fiber optic lines with such high speeds are currently already in place in the USA, as well as for some time now in Scandinavia, which are in any case pioneers in the field of fiber optic expansion. The Swedish provider Bahnhof, for example, has already been implementing speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s for more than four years, and at extremely favorable prices.

In any case, the expansion in Germany is likely to lower prices for fast fiber-optic Internet as a result of the cooperation between Vodafone and Altice, in addition to higher speeds and broader coverage. After all, competition is picking up speed, and Deutsche GigaNetz GmbH is currently working hard to expand its own fiber-optic network.
