With a clear commitment to innovation on the Chinese market, Volkswagen presented three pioneering concept vehicles at Auto Shanghai. Under the motto “In China, for China”, the ID. AURA, ID. ERA and ID. EVO are ambassadors for a new generation of vehicles that focus on electromobility, intelligent design and highly automated driving. According to the press release, the models are more than just studies – they form the technological basis for a product offensive that is set to include over 30 new models for China by 2027.
Highlights
- Three new electric vehicles celebrate their premiere in Shanghai: ID. AURA, ID. ERA and ID. EVO
- All models are equipped with AI-based driver assistance systems for automated driving up to level 2++
- Targeted development for the Chinese market based on local customer needs
- Series versions to become part of a comprehensive model offensive by 2027
ID. ERA: versatility and range for long distances
The ID. ERA is aimed at families and frequent drivers who value space, flexibility and range. The full-size SUV with three rows of seats not only offers generous interior space, but also an innovative drive concept: the ID. ERA is the first Volkswagen model to be equipped with a range extender.
This is a fuel-powered generator that recharges the battery while driving. This combination enables an impressive total range of over 1000 kilometers (300 km purely electric, 700 km with the generator).
The vehicle underlines Volkswagen’s strategy of addressing different mobility needs by combining long-distance comfort with electric mobility. Ideally suited for long distances without compromising on sustainability or comfort.
ID. EVO: Performance and individuality
With the ID. EVO, Volkswagen is presenting a vehicle aimed at a younger, tech-savvy target group. This all-electric full-size SUV is part of the new ID. UNYX family and is based on a powerful 800-volt platform that guarantees fast charging and high energy efficiency. The zonal electronics architecture is particularly noteworthy.
This continuously provides new functions and services via rapid over-the-air updates. This ensures that the vehicle is always up to date – a decisive factor for digital user experiences. The design of the ID. EVO stands out from the crowd with its striking lines and progressive lighting concept.
ID. AURA: Compact high-tech vehicle
With the ID. AURA, Volkswagen is launching a compact electric vehicle based on the CMP platform (Compact Main Platform), which was specially developed for the Chinese market. The target group is price-sensitive customers who nevertheless do not want to do without modern technology. In terms of technology, the ID. AURA features an AI-supported system for highly automated driving.
The platform enables particularly natural driving behavior and intelligent assistance functions. The interior features a tidy, future-oriented design with a large center console into which a smartphone-like UI/UX concept is integrated. A humanoid AI assistant takes over the central control and interaction – from navigation and infotainment to vehicle settings.
A look into the future of Volkswagen in China
With the presentation of the ID. AURA, ID. ERA and ID. EVO, Volkswagen is not only demonstrating technological innovation, but also a deep understanding of the needs of the Chinese market. It remains to be seen whether the traditional German company will be able to compete with the market dominance of Chinese manufacturer BYD with its upcoming models. Production models of the three studies are due to be launched on the market from 2026 – with prices and availability varying depending on the model and equipment.
