Volvo to offer all new models with Google infotainment and over-the-air updates in the future

All new Volvo models from model year 2023 onwards, which will be produced from May 2022, will be offered ex works with a Google-based infotainment system and wireless software updates (OTA updates) to the operating system. In this way, the Swedish automaker aims to continuously improve its vehicles even after delivery.

Volvo with OTA updates in all models

So far, Volvo has only offered Google infotainment and over-the-air updates on its all-electric models, but that will change very soon. As early as May 2022, all Volvo vehicles rolling off the production line are expected to benefit from these features.

With the launch for the Volvo S60, Volvo V60 and Volvo XC90, the complete model range will now enjoy Android Automotive, which provides access to various Google services, and wireless updates via the Internet.

New update to Android 11 released

Just this week, Volvo released a software update that lifts the built-in infotainment system to the latest version of Android Automotive OS, Android 11. This means that additional app categories are now available via the Google Play Store. For example, in the areas of navigation, charging and parking. Video streaming will also be possible later in the year.

The current OTA update also offers further functional improvements. These include optimized energy management, an improved timer for air conditioning and mobile app functions and applications in the vehicle.

The new energy management now keeps the high-voltage battery in a temperature range that conserves range, even on cold and hot days. The Volvo Cars app also provides more frequent updates on charging progress when the vehicle is charging at the home wallbox or a public charging point. The Google-based infotainment system offers personalization and access to integrated Google services such as Google Maps and voice control using Google Assistant, among other features.

In this regard, the current update represents the eighth complete update that Volvo has made available to its customers. “By enabling all Volvo models to receive over-the-air updates in the future, we are taking an important step towards our goal of improving our customers’ cars every day,” says Henrik Green, Chief Product Officer at Volvo Cars.
