VW Group: Delivery bottlenecks for e-cars force dealer quotas

It is well known that the ongoing chip crisis is no longer just an insurmountable obstacle when buying a new graphics card or games console. One industry that is also suffering greatly from the semiconductor shortage is the automotive industry. Without further ado, it cannot keep up with production. Some manufacturers, such as BMW or Tesla, are using scaled-down versions of their vehicles in order to be able to deliver. The situation is different at VW. Anyone who currently wants a model from the automotive group that relies on electric drive must be prepared for long waiting times.

ID.3 and ID.4 are in short supply

VW’s flagships in the form of the ID.3 and ID.4 in particular are in exceedingly high demand. Unfortunately, the group is currently slow to meet the high demand. That’s why VW is now pulling the ripcord and introducing dealer quotas, as Automobilwoche reports. What exactly do these look like? Dealers who want to order ID models from VW must first “earn” this right. This succeeds then, if one sells accordingly many burners. Apparently, this does not only affect e-cars of the VW brand. The Czech subsidiary Škoda is also said to be affected. According to the Automobilwoche report, licensed dealers have received a letter stating the corresponding quota. In this context, 999 internal combustion vehicles sold per year are said to entitle them to order 15x the ID.3 and 25x the ID.4.

Long waiting times for new cars

Should you currently be flirting with a fancy e-car from VW, you too will of course feel the delivery bottleneck. After all, you currently have to reckon with waiting times of at least a year. Delivery before 2023 would therefore be utopian. And that doesn’t just apply to the VW brand. At Audi, the situation looks even worse. For example, the Q4 E-Tron is not expected to be delivered before mid-2023. The situation is particularly bad for the extremely popular plug-in hybrid Škoda Octavia iV. Deliveries are not expected until August 2021.
