VW ID.2 X: Electric city SUV to succeed the T-Cross

With the VW ID.2 X, Volkswagen is apparently preparing an all-electric successor to the T-Cross. The compact e-SUV is to be positioned on the market at an aggressive price and enable a range of around 400 kilometers.

VW ID.2 X: New city e-SUV coming

The VW ID.2 X is to succeed the T-Cross as an all-electric city SUV and be positioned on the market alongside the electric Polo successor, the VW ID.2. The X in the name is to replace the previous “Cross” in the naming scheme.

At least that’s what the Autozeitung reports, citing sources in Volkswagen insider circles. According to the report, the ID.2 X will be produced at Seat in Martorell, Spain, although production is not expected to start until 2026.

ID.2 and ID. X are based on the VW ID.Life concept, with which Volkswagen had promised an affordable crossover. The company’s new Small MEB platform serves as the basis. A simplified kit for electric cars, it is designed to use only an electric motor and smaller batteries to achieve an attractive price. Unlike the ID.3, it drives the front axle.

VW ID.2 X with affordable price and high range

That should also be able to make the VW ID.2 X attractively priced. For example, Autozeitung expects the regular ID.2 to be positioned in the market for around 22,000 euros, while the X should ultimately be priced at around 23,000 euros.

Battery capacities of 50 kWh to 80 kWh are also expected, with associated ranges of around 400 kilometers. In combination with the low entry price, this would make the city e-SUV very attractive.

It is still unclear whether the design of the ID.Life will actually be adopted or whether a few new features will be added. After all, it will be more than three years before the VW ID.2 X is released in 2026.

However, with the electrification of the Polo by the VW ID.2 and the T-Cross by the VW ID.2 X, there are increasing signs of an all-electric future for the group. As early as August 2022, we reported that the popular Golf could also be on the brink of extinction and VW could be aiming for an all-electric future. Significantly ahead of schedule is the big limousine ID. Aero, which should be available as early as the second half of 2023.
