VW ID. Aero: All-electric sedan makes its world debut

A few days after the presentation of the first pictures of the concept study, the carmaker has officially unveiled the “electric Passat” VW ID. Aero officially presented in a world premiere, providing a lot of information and details right away. As a concept car, the model is expected to provide a preview of VW’s ID. family sedan.

VW ID. Aero: Electric Passat officially unveiled

After the first, rather theoretical study images, the new VW ID. Aero finally shows up in all its glory in fancy render images. At the same time, the automaker provides many more details about the concept of the all-electric sedan, which is to become the new top model of the ID. family.

From now on, the Aero will be offered in the upper mid-range sedan segment. Visually, the car, which is sometimes dubbed the “electric Passat,” relies on a progressive and aerodynamic design, from which the interior space is also expected to benefit.

“With the show car ID. AERO, we are giving a preview of the next member of the ID. Family. A car with an emotional and at the same time very aerodynamic design, a range of more than 600 kilometers, an exceptional amount of space as well as premium interior”, says Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Executive Officer of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand.

5 meters long, 620 km range

Just under five meters long, the concept car VW ID. Aero and relies on a sloping coupe-style roof. This also benefits the drag coefficient, which is said to be just 0.23. Thanks to the modular e-drive system (MEB) designed by VW, a design is also possible that combines short overhangs with a long wheelbase and also allows an enormous amount of space in the interior.

Also on offer is a powerful lithium-ion battery with a net energy content of 77 kWh, which in combination with efficient drive and the coherent air resistance should enable a range of up to 620 kilometers (WLTP).

The airstream flows optimally over the aerodynamically designed front and roof sections. The slightly retracted rear end with tear-off edge calms the airflow. The sporty 22-inch bicolor wheels are designed in the style of a turbine and integrated flush into the wheel housings.

The electric sedan, on the other hand, no longer offers classic door handles. Instead, illuminated touch surfaces are used, which further reduce drag. In terms of paint, the concept car is finished in Polar Light Blue Metallic. This is a light metallic shade whose color pigments produce a golden shimmer when the light falls on it. The roof is finished in high-gloss black as a contrast to the body.

Honeycomb pattern and matrix headlights

The front end of the VW ID. Aero relies on the typical honeycomb pattern that divides the model family. VW calls them “ID. Honeycombs”. In the case of the Aero, it is also divided into two horizontally in the bumper.

Also contributing to the striking design is the circumferential, narrow light strip to the left and right of the illuminated VW logo and above the innovative IQ.LIGHT – LED matrix headlights.

With interruptions, the light bar continues into the rear section so that it extends almost around the entire sedan. The dominant rear end has an eye-catching dark light strip and LED taillight clusters with a honeycomb structure.

MEB flexible in use

The VW ID. Aero also demonstrates the versatility and flexibility of Volkswagen’s all-electric MEB architecture. The shape and size of the modular e-drive system can be easily adapted for different types of vehicles, meaning it can fit in a compact car, a sedan, an SUV or a minivan.

“In addition, the MEB fully exploits the possibilities of e-mobility, enabling long ranges, maximum digital connectivity and over-the-air update capability,” promises the automaker.

ID. Aero: From China to Emden

With the sedan VW wants to push the e-car offensive in China. There, the ID. Aero is to be available there as the group’s fourth fully electric model series as early as the second half of 2023. VW is pursuing the ambitious plan that at least every second vehicle sold in China should be an e-vehicle as early as 2030. In Europe, the VW ID. Aero is expected to be produced at the Emden plant in the course of 2023.
