With watchOS 26, Apple is launching a comprehensive update for its smartwatch platform that sets new standards both visually and functionally. The focus is on a revised design, new fitness functions thanks to Apple Intelligence and clever improvements to operation and communication. For users, this means more individualization, more convenience – and more motivation in everyday life.
watchOS 26 takes the user experience to a new level by seamlessly combining design and artificial intelligence. Apple is particularly aiming for a more personal, proactive and healthier user experience. The new features appeal to both fitness enthusiasts and everyday users – without compromising on style.
- New design with “Liquid Glass” ensures a dynamic look and improved operation
- Workout Buddy analyzes training in real time and provides voice-based motivation
- Training app with major layout update and music suggestions to match the activity
- Smart stacks and messages with smarter suggestions and live translations
A fresh design that adapts intelligently
At the center of the new watchOS 26 design is the so-called “Liquid Glass”. This design technique uses transparency effects and real-time rendering to visually highlight content and make operation more intuitive. Control elements, the Control Center, apps and even the Photos watch face benefit from this fresh look. The latter in particular stands out with fluid digits that blend harmoniously with the chosen image motif.
In addition to aesthetics, functional elements have also been optimized: The Smart Stack not only displays widgets, but now also provides proactive notifications thanks to new prediction algorithms. These take into account sensor data, user habits and location information. For example, notifications for training or backtrack functions can be displayed automatically if they are relevant.
Workout Buddy: motivation with intelligence
One of the most outstanding features is “Workout Buddy” – a new function within the training app that is powered by Apple Intelligence. Workout Buddy uses health and activity data to motivate users during training by voice and inform them of their progress. These voice messages are based on the style of professional Fitness+ trainers and are generated in real time.
For example, when jogging, Workout Buddy points out split times, congratulates users on milestones reached or reminds them of set goals. The evaluation at the end of the workout is now also more personal and informative than ever before. Workout Buddy is available in English for popular activities such as running, walking, cycling, HIIT and strength training – in combination with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
More control, less effort: messages, gestures and music
watchOS 26 also makes everyday life much easier. The new one-handed gesture allows you to hide or manage messages with a quick turn of the wrist. Especially in situations where only one hand is free – for example when cooking or going for a walk – this is a real gain in convenience.
The Messages app receives several updates with watchOS 26: incoming messages can now be automatically translated into a preset language – ideal for international contacts. Apple Intelligence also recognizes the context of a conversation and suggests appropriate actions, such as starting a navigation or sending money with Apple Cash. Personalized backgrounds and improved quick replies also contribute to more intuitive use.
This is complemented by improved media control in the training app. Music and podcasts can be started automatically when a workout begins – including personalized playlist suggestions based on the type of workout and individual listening habits.
Developer tools, accessibility and new apps
Developers get 26 new APIs with watchOS, including for custom widgets and smart stack integration. Thanks to location data, apps can, for example, display suitable content when users are in certain locations – such as a ski tracking widget when entering a ski resort.
There are also important innovations in the area of accessibility: The Apple Watch now supports live captions in real time – directly from the iPhone – as well as new controls for live listening sessions. In addition, a new notes app adds a frequently requested function to the Watch: ticking off checklists, dictating entries and unlocking notes – all directly from your wrist.
Conclusion: The Apple Watch is getting smarter, more beautiful and more personal
With watchOS 26, Apple is making the Apple Watch an even more personal companion – visually with the new Liquid Glass design, functionally with Workout Buddy and Apple Intelligence. The smart integration of voice control, proactive notifications and optimized app control makes everyday life noticeably easier.
watchOS 26 will be available free of charge for Apple Watch Series 6 or newer from fall 2025. An iPhone 11 or newer with iOS 26 is required. The beta version will be available from July via the Apple Beta Software Program. Some features – such as Apple Intelligence – require current devices.
