Windows 11 update KB5058499: More control, new AI functions and gaming fixes

Microsoft has released a series of exciting new features for Windows 11 (version 24H2) with the optional May update KB5058499. The focus is on optimized HDR settings, further developed integration of artificial intelligence and important bug fixes that are particularly important for gamers. The update serves as a preview for the upcoming June release and can be installed manually via the Windows update settings.

Overview of the most important new features:

  • New HDR options for selective video playback without global activation
  • Extended copilot functions with “click to do” interaction
  • Structured, semantic search in Windows
  • Fix for graphics problems with certain games under Windows 11 24H2

Improved HDR settings for more flexibility

One of the most noticeable changes concerns the handling of HDR content. Users now have more control over when and how HDR is used. Specifically, HDR can now be activated specifically for video playback – regardless of whether it is switched on system-wide. This function was previously only available in the Windows Insider Program and is now accessible to all users.

The setting can be adjusted in the “System” > “Display” menu and is particularly aimed at users who want to consume HDR content without the Windows user interface being affected by the global HDR profile. This should be particularly useful for SDR-compatible monitors or hybrid workflows – for example in video or photo editing.

The update also brings practical innovations for administrators: The energy-saving mode can now be managed centrally via group policies, and it is possible to configure the taskbar so that certain apps cannot be removed by the user – a feature that is well suited to managed devices.

Copilot becomes more interactive and intelligent

Microsoft’s AI assistant Copilot is getting new functions as part of KB5058499 that make interaction much easier. With “Click to do”, users can open the context menu directly in images or texts by pressing “Windows key + mouse click”, which now also includes the “Ask Copilot” option. This function is now also available in the European Economic Area, although initially only in the English language version. Further actions have been enabled for Spanish and French.

Another practical feature: if you hold down the Windows + C key combination for two seconds, Copilot starts directly in voice mode. This makes it easier to use, especially when multitasking or in barrier-free working environments.

The Windows search has also been semantically enhanced. Users no longer have to enter exact terms, but can formulate them intuitively – such as “switch to dark mode” or “activate Bluetooth”. In the EWR, it is now also possible to search for images directly in the cloud. However, this feature is initially only available on devices with Snapdragon chips.

Gaming problems solved by graphics kernel fix

Particularly relevant for many users: Microsoft has fixed a bug in the graphics kernel that previously caused some games to crash or hang – especially after switching to Windows 11 24H2. This affected titles from Ubisoft, among others, for which the game developers or graphics card manufacturers such as Nvidia were wrongly blamed in the past.

How Microsoft has solved the problem technically remains open, but according to Windows Latest, the stability of affected games has been restored by the fix. So anyone who has been struggling with performance problems under Windows 11 24H2 should consider the update.

Conclusion: Versatile update with clear practical benefits

KB5058499 is more than just a preview – it brings useful innovations in areas that affect everyday life and productivity. Particularly noteworthy are the selective HDR usage, the smart further development of Copilot and the important fix for gaming problems. As this is an optional update, it can be installed in a targeted manner. The final version of the included functions is expected to be officially integrated in the June rollout.
