Xiaomi introduces its own smart glasses

Micro-LED display and numerous exciting technical details already read well for Xiaomi’s new stroke of genius. The Chinese company wants to bring its own version of a smart glass to the set, which is supposed to have interesting features like an extensive translation function on board.

First smart glass from China

Actually, we know Xiaomi mainly from the production of smartphones at a surprisingly good value for money. However, this is only the case in this country. A look at the Far East quickly makes it clear that the company is much more broadly positioned. Especially in the field of smart household helpers, the Chinese have a lot to offer. Now Xiaomi wants to launch smart glasses and thus broaden its product portfolio even more.

These glasses are supposed to live up to the obvious name “Smart Glasses”, especially with practical augmented reality (AR) features. In practice, this looks as follows: important information is to be displayed in the right lens. This will probably primarily include notifications from the smartphone. This should not only be practical for messenger texts. It should also greatly simplify navigation.

But the glasses are not only to become a simple medium for passing smartphone notifications. On top of that, there is a camera inside them. According to Xiaomi, it can be used not only to take photos. In addition, you can translate foreign-language texts directly into your own language with the help of this.

The design

If you take a look at Xiaomi’s design plans, the Smart Glasses seem a bit oversized. This may correspond to current eyewear designs, but whether this will still be contemporary in a few years, one must doubt. However, we can probably assume that the manufacturer will bring different designs to the market. After all, tastes are different. The weight is pleasingly light at 51 grams in view of the relatively large design.

If you consider that the Chinese are installing a lot of technology here, it is almost a lightweight. While the display is supposed to be on the right side, the camera, which is supposed to offer a resolution of 5 MP, slumbers on the left side. But where is the rest of the technology hidden? It is obvious that the arms of the glasses get a bit thicker towards the back. This also quickly reveals a difference to classic glasses. The thick ends are certainly due to the hidden technology.

Micro LED panel

So far, we only know the Micro LED technology from exotic and very expensive TV sets. Xiaomi wants to rely on a corresponding panel with a size of 2.4 mm x 2.02 mm for its glasses.

The native display size is extremely small, but is to be greatly enlarged thanks to special lenses. (Image: Xiaomi)

But you don’t have to worry about not being able to recognize screen content. With the help of different lenses, the image of the mini display is supposed to be enlarged. The content itself is likely to be displayed primarily in green. This has already confirmed Xiaomi itself.

Only the most important notifications

Since the smart glasses are permanently in front of your eyes, you don’t want to receive every single notification. Otherwise, the risk of distraction and the strain on the brain would certainly be unbearable. Xiaomi wants to address this circumstance with an artificial intelligence that only forwards the most important notifications to the wearer of the glasses.

In addition to navigation aids and translation aids, the AI of the smart glasses is also supposed to display phone calls. The translation feature in particular sounds exciting. With the help of the integrated camera, the glasses simply snap a picture of the corresponding text and should then be able to show you the translated version.

Further development of the Google Glasses

Xiaomi is by no means a pioneer when it comes to smart glasses. Google probably created the most notable model a few years ago with its Google Glasses. However, this was taken off the market due to privacy concerns. However, Xiaomi’s planned smart glasses are the closest thing to the search engine giant’s glasses.

Competition is likely to come from Facebook. After all, the company is planning to launch its own glasses with smart features in collaboration with eyewear manufacturer Ray Ban. However, since these are not supposed to have their own display, they can be seen more as a lite version of the smart glasses from Xiaomi or the Google Glasses.

Launch date is still unknown

We do not yet know at what point Xiaomi’s new glasses are to be launched. Unfortunately, the same also applies to the target price. However, we will keep you up to date in this regard.
