XPeng G9: New E-SUV from China charges 200 km range in just 5 minutes

Manufacturer XPeng has unveiled a new e-SUV in China and revealed the technical details. They are particularly proud of the high charging speed of the XPeng G9, which recharges a range of 200 kilometers in just 5 minutes. Although this is only possible at certain 480-kW charging stations.

Charging speed notwithstanding, the XPeng G9 has become quite a handsome e-SUV, somewhat reminiscent of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in terms of its front end. The main focus here is on its functions as the “fastest-charging, mass-produced e-car in the world.”

200 kilometers of range, calculated according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), are said to be rechargeable in just 5 minutes thanks to the 800V platform. However, this would only be possible at special charging stations provided by the manufacturer. The 480 kW S4 Supercharging Piles are said to offer customers a superior charging experience.

Overall, XPeng dates the runtime at 702 km, which is definitely an announcement and, if confirmed by the WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure), would also mean the top spot in the range best list among the e-SUVs.

This was only recently secured by the BMW iX xDrive50 in a test by a US magazine. In the test under real-world conditions on the road, the bulky BMW of the current model year achieved a range of 377 miles, the equivalent of around 607 kilometers.

Luxury interior and rich sound

Luxury also reigns supreme in the interior of the XPeng G9. For example, the E-SUV picks up on the manufacturer’s aesthetic design language and relies on many rounded edges. A high-quality finish and nappa leather are intended to create a warm and comfortable environment.

The G9 is also home to a full-featured Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). It relies on a full 31 LiDAR sensors, two Nvidia Drive Orin-X chips and a gigabit LAN architecture. The entire system is said to achieve a computing power of 508 tops.

Also on offer is an interactive 3D interface, which is supposed to provide a unique experience. Two 14.96-inch displays are used here, which are equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip. Content from both displays can be seamlessly shared. “The 3D multimedia system projects the real world onto the screen and provides real-time feedback while driving, while enhancing the immersive experience,” the manufacturer said.

Of course, there is also a voice assistant that is supposed to respond to dialogues from all four zones in the car within milliseconds. In addition, there is a 5D system called Xopera.

Xopera simulates the sound stage of a concert hall thanks to a total of 28 speakers with 2,250 watts of peak power. Combined with Dolby Atmos, vibrations in the seats would be made perceptible, while changes to the interior lighting, ventilation and in-car sounds would provide a unique experience – XPeng promises.

Mighty steam under the hood

The XPeng G9 is powered by a 405-kW engine (175 kW at the front, 230 kW at the rear), which together call up 717 Nm of torque. The chassis is made by specialists from Germany, the manufacturer promises, but does not name names.

Thanks to this power, the E-SUV is supposed to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in around 3 seconds. The X9 marks the spearhead of the manufacturer and is supposed to represent a vision for the future of electric cars.

Prices and availability

The XPeng G9 e-SUV is scheduled to launch in China as early as September, with deliveries still scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2022. The manufacturer has not yet named prices, nor the launch date for Europe. That the G9 will also be offered here is already certain, at least according to the announcement.

It could then possibly take on the Togg E-SUV from Turkey, which started test production at the beginning of August and is scheduled for series production in the first quarter of 2023.
