Yamaha YH-5000SE: High-end headphones with orthodynamic drivers for 5,499 euros

Audio specialist Yamaha has introduced a new high-end headphone with innovative Orthodymanic drivers that weighs just 320 grams and is supposed to realize an impressive sound. However, with an MSRP of 5,499 euros, it also has its price.

The Yamaha YH-5000SE in detail

For the Yamaha YH-5000SE, the manufacturer wants to have perfected every little detail of the high-end headphones to achieve a perfect and audiophile sound. Thus, it marks the first headphones with the number 5000, which only superior high-end products such as the NS-5000 speakers receive.

The new flagship headphone relies on Orthdynamic drivers, which were used in a similar form in the HP-1 in the 1970s. The use of a planar-magnetic driver, which Yamaha has further developed and calls Orthodynamic, marks a special feature here.

Here, an extremely thin diaphragm is used, on which there is a conductor track – this takes over the function of a usual voice coil. In an arrangement of permanent magnets, a uniform magnetic field is thus generated, producing uniform sound waves.

In the end, the headphones have an impressive frequency response from 5 Hz to 70,000 Hz. The specially developed diaphragm is the result of extremely elaborate development work with prototype construction and careful measurements including rigorous analyses.

Of course, True Sound technology, which is supposed to produce a sound as intended by the performers, is also part of the package. This is also used, for example, in the Yamaha TW-E7B and TW-ES5A in-ear headphones.

High-quality workmanship

However, the Yamaha YH-5000SE not only wants to convince in terms of sound, but the build quality is also said to go far beyond usual headphones. The frame is made of magnesium, allowing for a housing weighing just 320 grams. The headband is made of stainless steel and features an optimal distribution of lateral pressure as well as a continuously variable fine adjustment to provide maximum comfort during longer listening sessions.

Quality is also on the note for the ear pads and cables, where you can choose. A smooth version made of sheepskin is already included with the headphones. Additionally, attachments made from the luxurious microfiber fabric Ultrasuede are included. It’s especially soft and feels warm and comfortable.

A 3.5mm cable with a 3-pin plug and a balanced 4.4mm cable with a five-pin plug (Pentaconn), as well as a 6.3mm adapter, make for easy connection. The cables are all made of pure copper, coated with silver and precisely braided.

Each cable and the ear pads have an impact on the sound. This way Yamaha wants to realize a more individual sound. A headphone stand is also included in the delivery. A two-meter long HXC-SC020 cable with XLR connector from Neutrik is also offered as an option. The ear pads can also be exchanged and replaced with optionally available models.

Price and Availability

The Yamaha YH-5000SE over-ear headphones are handmade in Japan. The exclusive flagship is therefore produced under particularly strict quality controls at Yamaha’s Kakegawa plant, which is known worldwide for exclusive grand pianos, upright pianos and audio components.

The headphones are scheduled to be available at select retailers in early 2023. The recommended retail price is 5,499.00 euros, but quality also has its price.
