Manufacturer ZTE has unveiled the new Axon 40 lineup in China, which is led by the new top model ZTE Axon 40 Ultra. Features highlights include an under-display front camera, an extremely bright 120 Hz display, and a 64 MP triple camera on the back.
ZTE Axon 40 Ultra: details and info
The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra marks the new flagship of the Axon 40 series, which the manufacturer unveiled yesterday in China, and is also complemented by the Pro model. You can expect the third generation of the under-display front camera in the Ultra, which is missing in the Pro model.
It enables a fully integrated display design. Specifically, it is an AMOLED panel with a 6.8-inch diagonal, a resolution of 2,480 x 1,116 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. PWM dimming with 1,440 Hz is used for a quieter display. The display also gets extremely bright with up to 1,500 nits and offers a contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1.
The battery of the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra comes to a capacity of 5,000 mAh and can be charged quickly with 80 watts. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is at work in the smartphone, which is supported by 8 GB, 12 GB or even 16 GB LPDDR6 RAM. 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB UFS 3.1 storage are also offered, as well as a 36.356 mm² vapor-chamber cooling and a Snapdragon sound chip that enables DTS:X Ultra sound.
The Axon 40 Ultra’s camera
The Ultra’s under-display front camera comes in at a resolution of 16 megapixels, but the triple-camera setup on the back is considerably more interesting. It consists of three sensors with a resolution of 64 megapixels each.
The main camera has a high aperture of f/1.6 and a focal length of 35 mm, and also features optical image stabilization. In addition, there is an ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.35 and a focal length of 16 mm, which also has an autofocus. This should also allow macro shots from a distance of 4 mm. Both cameras rely on a customized Sony IMX787 sensor.
The third in the bunch is a telephoto camera with a periscope lens, which comes to 91 mm focal length and an aperture of f/3.5. OIS is also available. All three cameras can also record videos in 8K resolution and even simultaneously to switch seamlessly between the lenses. Additionally, the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra offers a 3D ToF sensor to help with focusing.
ZTE Axon 40 Pro
The Pro model, on the other hand, lacks the under-display front camera. There is a 6.67-inch display here, but it comes with a refresh rate of 144 Hz. The Hull HD+ display (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) gets a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits.
The Snapdragon 870 along with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM, as well as 256 GB or 512 GB of system storage are used here. The main camera takes pictures with a resolution of 100 megapixels, and there is also an 8 MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a macro camera. The 5,000 mAh battery charges quickly with a maximum of 66 watts, and DTS:X Ultra is also available.
However, the manufacturer has not yet given any details about the prices and availability of the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra and Pro. It is also still unclear whether both smartphones will even make it to Europe.
