The popular messenger Discord, known mainly to gamers, is to be integrated into the PlayStation 5 next year. To that end, Sony has invested in Discord to firmly embed the messenger into the consoles and thus the gaming experience.
The new partnership between Sony and Discord was announced in a short announcement by Sony Interactive Entertainment. How much Sony has invested in Discord in the process is not known, however, it is said to be a minority stake in the company.
The integration of the messenger service into the console and mobile devices is supposed to happen as early as next year. The integration of Discord will significantly improve communication during gaming. The Discord community is already enormous, so the company can record more than 140 million active users per month.
Big plans for 2022
Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment says of the new partnership, “Our teams are already working to connect Discord to the social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences together on console and mobile devices starting early next year so friends, groups and communities can be together, have fun and communicate easily while playing games together.”
Discord has been active since 2015 and has caught on with gamers in particular, so an investment in the messenger service makes perfect sense, as well as good sense. What exactly the partnership between the two companies now looks like has not yet been published. What is clear, however, is that PlayStation gamers will be able to access the service on the console and on the go. This will most likely be possible on the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 5 and also via the PlayStation App.
Unfortunately, it is also unclear what the implementation will look like, for example, whether a Discord app is planned for the console or just a link to the accounts. It therefore remains exciting to see how this partnership will develop.
