Philips 439P1 – 4K monitor in 42.5 inch

After the Momentum 436M6VBPAB from Philips, the manufacturer has now released another 42.5-inch model with 4K UHD. The size and resolution are identical to the Momentum, but the Philips 439P1 is rather intended for work.

Entertainment vs. work

The Philips Momentum 436M6VBPAB monitor is more for entertainment, and the Philips 439P1 is for work, with the KVM switch and two USB-C ports meant to boost productivity. Both monitors feature a 42.5-inch VA LCD panel. The display is at the standard frequency of 60 Hz and 3,840 x 2,160 pixels.

Connection diversity

Differences between the two monitors are in the backlight. The Philips 439P1 has neither local dimming nor the peak brightness required for DisplayHDR 1000 on board. The 439P1 is specified DisplayHDR 400 for it, which gives it a maximum brightness of 400 cd/m². The contrast ratio of the monitor is 4,000:1, which is not unexpected for VA monitors. A color depth of 10 bits is achieved in simulation (8 bits + FRC). According to the manufacturer, the monitor offers an extended color spectrum and covers 90 percent of the Adobe RGB and 126 percent of the sRGB color space.

However, the monitor’s strengths lie more in its connectivity. It has numerous video inputs with one DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 and two USB-C jacks that can also be used as DisplayPort via Alternate Mode. In addition, there are three USB-A sockets, an Ethernet port (Rj45, 1 GB/s) and a headphone output.

With the KVM switch, two computers can be connected to the monitor and controlled with the same keyboard and mouse. The USB-C port including power supply turns the Philips 439P1 into a docking station at the same time. One USB-C port provides up to 90 watts, while the other one only provides 15 watts.

Availability and prices

The new Philips 439P1 is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year. It is not yet clear where the price will go from there.
