1MORE S70 Review: Comfortable open-ear headphones

Open-ear headphones are the segment that has seen the most progress in 2024. The leaps that models such as the beyerdynamic Verio 200 (our test) or the Shokz OpenFit Air (our test) have made are absolutely impressive. 1MORE, known for its convincing headphones in terms of price-performance ratio, has also been involved in this segment for some time and is now presenting a new model, the 1MORE S70, which combines a convincing sound with an attractive price. 1MORE S70 test: Even more comfortable design

  • very comfortable for small to medium-sized ears
  • appealing design
  • quite large charging case

After the Fit SE30 and the Fit S50, the 1MORE S70 is now the manufacturer’s latest open-ear model. And the expertise pays off, because in terms of wearing comfort, the S70s are also the manufacturer’s most comfortable open-ears.

This category is usually characterized by its high level of comfort anyway, as the headphones are usually placed around the ear with a flexible headband, leaving the ear canal free. However, this does not work equally well for all manufacturers. After all, the headband must be pleasantly soft and flexible, yet firm enough to guarantee a secure fit.

Fortunately, 1MORE does a great job here and delivers one of the most comfortable open-ear models around. At least for medium to small ears, those with large ears will feel the headband quite strongly behind the ear.

This is not only thanks to the pleasantly soft headband, but also the comparatively low weight of 8.9 grams per earphone. Although this is not a record value, it is still very good. Compared to many other open-ear headphones, the front part sits slightly in the ear cup, which should enhance the sound.

1MORE S70

The design of the 1MORE S70 is reminiscent of most open-ear headphones. This variant also has a fairly wide, elongated base, the outside of which is used as a touch surface for operation. This is adorned with the manufacturer’s logo.

The drivers on the inside and underside bring the music to your ears. The whole thing is charged in a fairly large but flat charging case via USB-C. At 80 mm x 65 mm x 27 mm (width x depth x height), it is only partially pocket-friendly, but has a particularly large battery.

Battery life, features and operation

  • Up to 40 hours of battery life; 12 hours for the earphones
  • Bluetooth 5.3 with Multipoint
  • IPX5 certification

Keyword battery: In combination with the charging case, it achieves a full 40 hours of battery life. That’s far longer than the competition, which usually finishes between 20 and 30 hours. The earphones themselves are also extremely durable. Up to 12 hours of use are possible before the open-ear headphones need to be recharged in the case.

They are charged exclusively via USB-C. Thanks to the quick-charging function, five minutes in the charging case is enough for a further two hours of music playback. A full charge takes a total of two hours.

1MORE S70

The 1MORE S70 are also very well equipped. They rely on Bluetooth 5.3, which ensures a stable connection and impressive energy efficiency. The range is good.

Unfortunately, there is no support for high-resolution audio codecs: Only AAC and SBC are available. However, this is not surprising in this price range. Nevertheless, several technologies and algorithms work under the hood to improve the sound:

The dual magnetic drivers should deliver up to 40 percent more volume, the manufacturer promises. However, it is not entirely clear how this compares to what. There is also Bass More+ technology, which is supposed to deliver a fuller, richer bass by expanding the bass range of the DSP.

1MORE S70

ADO Acoustic Dual Orientation Technology, on the other hand, is designed to enable precise sound transmission through ear-like structures and effectively prevent the sound from escaping. More on how well this works later.

The headphones are also IPX5-certified, making them sweat- and water-resistant and therefore suitable for sports. Unfortunately, there is no wear detection, but there is Bluetooth Multipoint for pairing with two devices.

Customizable operation and disappointing app

  • Touch operation… which is unfortunately not very precise
  • Operation can be customized in the app
  • Companion app with little benefit

The 1MORE S70 is operated via the touch-sensitive outer sides. The entire silver contrasting area serves as a touch surface. At least that’s what the manufacturer promises. In practice, however, things look different, as the open-ears only implement commands in the front area close to the ear.

Unfortunately, this is not all that precise; we often have to tap the surfaces several times before the desired action is even recognized and implemented. The earphones then confirm this with a short beep. The touch control also has to contend with a noticeable latency: inputs are implemented with a significant delay.

1MORE S70

We can only hope that 1MORE will remedy this with a firmware update, as the operating concept, which can be further customized in the 1MORE app, is actually very appealing.

By default, a double tap on both sides starts or pauses playback and is responsible for answering or hanging up calls. If you press and hold the touch surfaces for three seconds, the respective voice assistant is activated.

Within the app, however, you can set different actions for double and triple tapping and do this individually for both sides. This allows you to adjust the volume or skip to the previous or next track, for example.

Speaking of the companion app: Apart from the extremely bumpy translation, it only offers a few functions. It provides information about the charging status, allows you to update the firmware and allows you to influence the sound with six preset equalizers – unfortunately, you can’t create your own EQ presets. And I didn’t hear too much difference between the various EQs.

Audio quality and microphones

  • Full, lively sound
  • good bass response
  • fairly low maximum volume

In terms of sound, open-ear headphones are of course always an issue. Even the best models don’t achieve the full, lively sound of their in-ear counterparts, which is simply due to the design. With the exception of the Huawei FreeClip (our test), which are the acoustic non-plus-ultra in the open-ear segment.

The 1MORE S70s don’t come close either, but they deliver a convincing performance in their class and score points with a pleasant and warmly tuned sound image, in which even the bass is well accentuated. However, you shouldn’t expect a miracle.

1MORE S70

Especially if you manage to attach the earphones in the ear cup, which is unfortunately not possible with my ear shape. If you manage to do this, the sound stage appears even fuller and airier in the treble, which culminates in a very pleasant and lively sound.

However, the maximum volume should be a little higher, but this could also be due to my ear shape, because if you press the earphones into your ear a little, they get pleasantly loud – although not as loud as in-ear or over-ear models.

Good microphone quality

1MORE has equipped the S70 with four microphones (two per earbud), which also feature an AI-supported ENC function to effectively block out wind and ambient noise.

Microphone test recording beyerdynamic Verio 200:

Microphone test recording Shokz OpenFit Air:

Overall, I like the microphone quality quite well; we have already seen competitors here that sound significantly worse. But there are also some that offer significantly better sound, such as the Shokz OpenFit Air. The quality is definitely good enough for occasional phone calls. We can be heard quite well even in loud street noise.

1MORE S70 Review: Conclusion

If you’re interested in open-ear headphones and don’t want to spend too much money, you’ll undoubtedly find what you’re looking for with the 1MORE S70. The outstanding battery life of up to 12 hours, which is far superior to most competitors, and the excellent wearing comfort are particularly impressive.

However, the new model also delivers a strong performance in terms of sound, scoring points with a full, warm and lively sound that hardly needs any adjustments. However, how good the earphones sound and how loud they get also depends on your own ear shape – so the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as the differences are enormous.

The only downside is the imprecise and delayed touch operation, which we hope the manufacturer can improve with a firmware update. The companion app is also rather disappointing, but otherwise there is not much to complain about.
