For years, drones have been filming using the same principle: you point the camera, fly, and hope you capture the moment. The Antigravity A1 completely turns this concept on its head. The world’s first 360-degree consumer drone, developed by Insta360 under the new Antigravity brand, simply captures the entire space around it. And you decide only after the flight where the camera should have been pointing. The result is unique in its own way, but it’s not perfect either. Design & Build Quality: Lightweight and Clever
Weighing in at 249 grams, the Antigravity A1 deliberately stays below the magic 250-gram threshold. This is no coincidence—it’s by design: In the EU, this places the drone in the beginner-friendly C0 class, which is subject to significantly less restrictive regulations. You don’t need an EU pilot’s license for the higher levels, and you can take off more easily in many everyday situations. This is a real advantage for travel and spontaneous shots.
The A1 feels pleasantly compact in your hand; its size is roughly reminiscent of DJI’s Mini series or the Neo 2 (our review). It’s certainly one of the best entry-level drones of 2026. A particular highlight is the motorized retractable landing gear. After takeoff, the legs retract, clearing the view downward. This is what makes seamless 360-degree recording possible without any distracting struts in the frame. A clever solution.
The bundle leaves nothing to be desired, though. It includes the drone, controller, goggles, all necessary cables, a charging station, and two additional batteries—everything you need to get started. The package comes in a handy shoulder bag with room for the drone and all its accessories.
We were less impressed with the choice of materials. The body is made entirely of plastic and, when compared directly to heavier models, doesn’t feel quite as high-quality or robust. With a 250-gram drone, this is physically almost unavoidable, but you should still fly it with appropriate care. At least Antigravity has thought this through: the two fisheye lenses are interchangeable. So a scratch on the lens doesn’t automatically mean the end of the entire camera. This is a sensible safeguard, especially for a drone that’s bound to make contact with the ground from time to time.
However, due to the Antigravity A1’s design, it isn’t quite as convenient to use as you might be used to with other drones. The drone, controller, and Vision Goggles—plus extra batteries—take up quite a bit of space, so you really have to make a conscious decision to bring the drone (or rather, the entire package) with you. For some competitors, the barrier to entry is simply much lower.
Especially since the setup process—even though it’s fairly intuitive and guided by a well-designed tutorial in the app—takes quite a bit of time. The initial firmware update, for example, took three attempts in my test before it installed without errors. That’s a bit frustrating, especially for beginners who just want to “go for a quick flight.”
Image and Video Quality: 8K All Around, With One Catch
Let’s get to the heart of the matter. The Antigravity A1 records in true 8K at 30 frames per second, or optionally in 5.6K at a smooth 60 fps, or in 4K at up to 100 fps for slow motion. It captures photos at up to 120 megapixels. Two 1/1.28-inch sensors record simultaneously, and their images are combined to form the complete spherical image.
In practice, the A1 delivers impressive, highly detailed footage in good lighting conditions. The real appeal lies in post-processing: From a single flight, you can later extract several completely different camera angles, pan freely, and even choose between aspect ratios like 16:9, 9:16, and 1:1. One flight, many clips. For content creators who produce for Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok simultaneously, this is worth its weight in gold.

But here’s the catch: Because a conventional 16:9 video is always just a section of the 360-degree sphere, the full 8K resolution never makes it into the finished clip. The more you zoom in or select a narrow frame, the more noticeable the loss of sharpness becomes. And in low light, the A1 shows noticeable weaknesses: The small sensors start producing noise sooner than on drones with a classic, larger single camera. If you plan to use the A1 primarily during the blue hour or at night, you should temper your expectations a bit.
Especially since the 360-degree videos require quite a bit of post-processing. That’s because you get special Antigravity formats for photos and videos. These cannot be used without post-processing. Using either the Antigravity app for iOS and Android or the PC/Mac alternative, Antigravity Studio, the 360-degree videos must first be cropped before they’re truly ready for social media. Fortunately, this process is extremely intuitive, but it does require a bit of extra effort.
Controls, Grip Controller & Vision Goggles
The controls are just as innovative as the camera concept itself. Instead of a traditional remote control joystick, you control the A1 with the Grip Controller—a one-handed motion controller with haptic feedback. You move your hand intuitively, and the drone follows. In our test, this proved to be surprisingly accessible, especially for beginners. Two flight modes (a simpler motion mode and a more direct FPV mode) cater to both beginners and more ambitious pilots.
The second key component is the Vision Goggles. These video goggles, which make you look like an ant, feature two 1-inch micro-OLED displays, each with a resolution of 2560 × 2560 pixels, and head tracking: When you turn your head, you move live through the 360-degree view. It’s just as if you were floating in the air yourself. It’s a pretty immersive experience and a lot of fun. Handy: You can share the live feed with bystanders via the outside of the goggles, so others can follow along from the drone’s perspective.
When used with the joystick and goggles, the drone flies wherever you look. If you look up and pull the throttle trigger, the A1 flies upward. If you turn around, the drone turns with you. This is by far the most intuitive control system I’ve seen so far, and after a short learning curve, it’s a breeze to use.
However, there’s an important legal point to consider here. When flying with video goggles, you no longer have direct visual contact with the drone. In Germany and the EU, you need a spotter who keeps the drone in sight at all times. So, flying on your own using only the goggles is not permitted. Another critical point to note is that the radio connection degrades noticeably faster when encountering obstacles or in urban environments than is typical with established systems.
Another point that shouldn’t be overlooked is motion sickness. Personally, I’m not usually very prone to it, and I don’t have any problems with VR headsets or 3D glasses. But while testing the Antigravity A1, I started to feel quite queasy in my stomach after just a few minutes. So if you’re prone to this, you should think twice before buying—or at least try a test flight if possible. After all, the A1 offers two flight modes, the first of which is designed for those with sensitive stomachs.
App, Editing & Smart Flight Modes
After the flight, the software takes over. Using the Antigravity app and the familiar Insta360 Studio desktop software, you can frame, edit, and export your footage. Anyone who has ever worked with an Insta360 camera will find their way around immediately—the reframing workflow is among the best the market currently has to offer.
The A1 has no shortage of smart modes. Deep Track automatically tracks a subject, AI-powered editing modes can turn your raw footage into finished clips on demand, and there’s also Sky Path for planned flight routes, time-lapse, and even voice control. The omnidirectional obstacle detection system, complete with bypass mode, keeps the drone from colliding with obstacles when needed.
However, not everything runs completely smoothly. Subject tracking works more reliably during post-processing than in real time and still struggles with fast, close-range movements. And because Antigravity continues to develop the A1 with frequent firmware updates, you absolutely need an internet connection to update it—without an update, certain features may remain disabled. That’s the typical trade-off with a first-generation product. That said, the obstacle detection system is significantly more cautious than DJI’s: While I could fly a DJI drone through a cornfield or up a tower without any problems, the Antigravity A1 stops well before reaching such obstacles to avoid a potential collision.
Battery & Flight Time
Regarding battery life, Antigravity claims up to 24 minutes with the standard battery and up to 39 minutes with the optional high-capacity battery. As is almost always the case with drones, these are lab figures. In practice—with wind, cooler temperatures, and active flying—we averaged around 19 minutes per standard battery.
That’s enough for a few shots, but if you’re planning a full day of filming, you should definitely opt for the Explorer or Infinity bundle, which includes multiple batteries. There’s also one downside: The 360-degree footage generates large amounts of data, so the microSD memory card fills up quickly.
On top of that, the range is also somewhat limited. In my test, connection drops occurred after just about one kilometer in open terrain. A DJI Neo 2 or Lito X1 flies significantly farther, especially since Antigravity specifies a range of 6 km. However, I couldn’t even come close to reaching that.
Who is the Antigravity A1 for?
The Antigravity A1 isn’t a drone for everyone—and it doesn’t aim to be. It’s clearly aimed at content creators, action sports filmmakers, and adventurous creatives who are looking for a unique, immersive look and aren’t afraid of a little post-production. Those willing to invest time in editing will be rewarded with perspectives that are impossible to achieve with any traditional drone.
On the other hand, the A1 is less suitable for anyone who wants quick, ready-to-use results straight from the camera, expects maximum image quality in any lighting conditions, or wants to perform classic, aggressive FPV racing maneuvers. For them, specialized drones are still the better choice.
Antigravity A1 Review: Conclusion
The Antigravity A1 is one of the most exciting new drones to come out in a long time. Insta360 combines FPV flying and 360-degree recording into a completely new experience—and it’s surprisingly well thought out. The “fly first, frame later” principle takes the pressure off flying, the invisible drone effect looks spectacular, and control via the grip controller and vision goggles is more intuitive than you’d expect—especially for beginners.
However, it’s clear that the A1 is a first-generation product. The plastic housing feels less robust, the wireless range drops off too quickly when encountering obstacles, the image gets noisy in low light, and due to the effective cropped resolution and the mandatory post-processing, it requires some patience and know-how. Added to this are the high price and the requirement for a spotter when flying with the goggles in the EU. The issue of motion sickness shouldn’t be overlooked either, nor should the comparatively extensive (and absolutely necessary) post-processing.
But honestly: In return, the Antigravity A1 rewards you with a unique flying experience that is currently unmatched in this form. The bottom line is that the Antigravity A1 isn’t a replacement for a classic (and sophisticated) photography drone, but rather a standalone, creative tool. Those who understand what it’s designed for will find a fascinating drone that opens up new cinematic possibilities. Everyone else might want to wait for the second generation.
