A 171-inch screen that fits inside a glasses case—that’s the promise behind this joint venture between Asus ROG and AR specialist XREAL. The ROG XREAL R1 projects a massive virtual screen right in front of your eyes. It’s powered by two Micro-OLED panels running at up to 240 hertz. It also features electrochromic lenses that can be darkened. Sound by Bose is included, and Anchor Mode anchors the image in the room. Sound like something from the future? But it comes at a price: ASUS is asking around 900 euros for the package. Our Asus ROG XREAL R1 review will determine whether it’s worth it. We put the glasses through their paces: gaming on the Xbox Series X and PC, watching videos from a smartphone—and, for “research,” of course, the occasional TV series marathon.

Package Contents & First Impressions
Our review package came with everything the ecosystem has to offer. In addition to the glasses themselves, the box also contained the ROG Control Dock GCD01—more on that later. Also included:
- Carrying case
- Three nose pads in different sizes (one pre-installed)
- Insert for prescription lenses (without prescription; lenses are fitted by an optician)
- several cables for the glasses, dock, and media player
- Glasses cleaning cloth
- Instructions and warranty card
The packaging is divided into several layers and small boxes. This ensures that all components are neatly separated and protected inside the box. The only downside is that repacking it becomes a bit of a puzzle due to the many layers. Incidentally, there was no unpleasant odor this time—something that has definitely happened before with test units.
The build quality is impressive at first glance. Hinges, seams, and gaps look clean; nothing feels cheap. This also applies to the dock, which is surprisingly lightweight. The pill-shaped carrying case is significantly larger than a standard glasses case. However, the glasses sit securely inside and are well protected. We’d have no hesitation in trusting the case to withstand even a fully packed backpack.
Fit: IPD Options and Nose Pads
One thing to note before purchasing: The R1 comes in two fixed sizes. IPD (Interpupillary Distance) refers to the distance between the centers of the pupils. The Narrow variant covers approximately 60 to 66 millimeters, while the Wide version covers approximately 66 to 75 mm. For an exact measurement of 66 millimeters, ASUS recommends the larger version. An interesting side note: ASUS contradicts itself in the official brochure. On one page, “Narrow” ends at 66 millimeters, while in the FAQ it ends at 65. So before buying, you should know your interpupillary distance—an optician can measure it in a minute.
With an interpupillary distance of 65 millimeters, we specifically chose the Narrow version. It paid off: The glasses fit well right away. The three interchangeable nose pads handle the fine-tuning. Switching them noticeably changes the pressure on the nose—for us, the middle pad distributed the weight most comfortably. The physical adjustment was thus completed in just a few minutes.
The buttons and menus, however, took significantly longer to get used to. The OSD, the quick menu, and the re-centering function aren’t self-explanatory at first glance. In addition, some menus close quite quickly if no input is provided—which is especially annoying at the beginning. After a while, you get the hang of the logic, but operation only becomes truly comfortable when using the Control Dock. We found its five-way switch to be consistently more comfortable to use than the buttons on the bracket.
Design: A Nod to Neo
Visually, the R1 makes no secret of what it is. The glasses look futuristic and distinctly high-tech—they certainly don’t pass for ordinary sunglasses. The look is reminiscent of The Matrix, cyborgs, and early visions of the future. At first glance, the editorial team promptly sent a shout-out to Neo. At home, that doesn’t matter. But if you put these glasses on in a train or a café, you’ll definitely stand out.
One maintenance issue that’s a bit of a bummer: Skin oils from your forehead and face quickly become visible on the lenses. While fingerprints and dust are easy to remove, the included cleaning cloth gets used regularly. Kitchen paper or rough cloths have no place on these delicate lenses.
First impression of the image: Wow (but with a caveat)
Then came the moment of truth in the Asus ROG XREAL R1 review: put on the glasses, turn on the media player. And yes, the virtual screen immediately gave us a “wow” moment. The image can appear huge and draws you in much more than any smartphone or laptop display. If you bring the screen very close, it creates an almost VR-like impression. However, it’s not a fully immersive VR experience—the real environment remains visible, depending on the tint. The advertised 171 inches is a simulated size at a virtual distance of four meters, not an actual screen size.
It quickly became clear: bigger isn’t automatically better. If the screen is brought too close, it’s no longer possible to comfortably take in all areas at once. In games with menu bars, maps, or health bars at the bottom, these elements sometimes fall outside the comfortable field of view. For movies, the close-up setting can still be appealing—it feels like sitting in the front row of a movie theater. For games, a slightly more distant setting was usually the better choice. There’s no one-size-fits-all “sweet spot”; the most comfortable configuration depends on the content and your viewing habits.
Our biggest criticism of the display system: the visible window is simply a bit too small for us. Especially with large, close-up images, the 57-degree field of view reaches its limits. You then have to move your head or gaze more to take everything in. Slightly larger lenses would have enhanced the experience.
Sharpness, Text, and Colors
In normal use, the image appears quite sharp, and even the corners were generally acceptable. We didn’t notice any significant or persistent edge blurring. Slight blurring at the edges occurred depending on the game and scene, though much less frequently with movies. We didn’t notice any distracting color fringing during everyday use.
When it comes to small text, that’s where the wheat is separated from the chaff. Larger text and video content are easy to read. Small icons and fonts, on the other hand, sometimes appeared slightly soft. Overlaid YouTube comments were initially difficult to make out at an unfavorable viewing angle. The solution was distance. A simulated viewing distance of about three meters worked significantly better for smartphone mirroring than viewing up close. We’ll follow up with a detailed comparison of small Windows fonts at 120 and 240 hertz. It’s sure to be interesting: ASUS itself admits that text can appear softer at 240 hertz.
The R1 really shines with dark content. We used the gloomy game *The Medium* on the Xbox Series X as our test scene. What we saw: a tree, a shadow on a frozen lake, and fine cracks in the ice. The shadow remained clearly visible, and the cracks didn’t get lost even in dark areas. Details don’t get lost in a sea of black here—the Micro-OLEDs’ black level is impressive. Colors really stood out, especially in animated series: vibrant, rich, and a true delight on the giant screen.
Electrochromic Glasses: Dimming at the Push of a Button
The R1 also works during the day in a brighter room. Direct sunlight coming through the window visibly dims the display. However, the effect is significantly less pronounced than what you might experience with a projector, for example. The image remains recognizable and usable, though it still looks better in a dimmed room.
This is where the electrochromic glass comes into play. The three tint levels significantly alter how much of the surroundings still shines through. At full tint, you’re noticeably more immersed in a movie or game; at a lower level, the room remains present. This is handy if you don’t want to be completely cut off from the outside world.
The highlight is the automatic transparency in Anchor mode. When you look away from the virtual image, the lenses lighten on their own—almost reflexively. There’s a slight delay, but it never stood out as a negative during use. The automatic feature worked reliably and without glitches regardless of where you looked. Glancing briefly at the controller, taking a sip, checking the room—it all feels surprisingly natural.
Anchor and Follow Modes: The Screen Stays Put
The R1 supports two display modes. In Follow mode, the image moves with your line of sight, so it always stays right in front of your eyes. In Anchor mode, on the other hand, the screen is virtually anchored in the room. When you turn your head, the projection stays in place—just like a TV mounted on the wall. The calculations are performed directly on the glasses’ X1 chip, without any additional software.
And this worked really well in our test with the Asus ROG XREAL R1. The anchored image remained stable in place. Even after ten, twenty, or more minutes, no noticeable drift was observed. Small head movements didn’t cause the image to shake. We didn’t measure the position down to the millimeter—but in practical use, Anchor mode seemed rock-solid. If the image does need to be realigned, you simply hold down the menu button and redefine the center point. After a short learning curve, this is quick and intuitive to do.
For watching movies at home, Anchor was our clear favorite—the screen stands in the room like a movie screen. Follow mode is likely to shine when you’re on the go, such as on a train or in the passenger seat. However, we haven’t yet put it through a real-world test on a road trip. Another positive: we didn’t experience any dizziness, nausea, or headaches at any point. The only thing was that taking it off after long sessions felt a bit strange at first.
Connectivity in Practice: Xbox, Smartphone, and a Found Cable
We tested the device primarily with the Xbox Series X, connected via the Control Dock. Additionally, the headset was connected directly to a smartphone via USB-C. Important to note: For a direct connection, the USB-C port on the source device must support DisplayPort Alt Mode. A standard charging port isn’t sufficient.
The smartphone connection was essentially plug-and-play. On the very first attempt, however, switching between portrait and landscape orientation didn’t work properly. After unplugging and reconnecting the cable once, the automatic orientation worked flawlessly. Videos and pre-recorded content play back smoothly via the smartphone. Operating the phone while wearing the glasses is more difficult. Without a direct view of the display, it’s hard to tell where your fingers are tapping. Short inputs work fine, but typing longer messages isn’t much fun.
The cable was a pleasant surprise. Contrary to what we initially thought, the USB-C cable isn’t permanently attached to the glasses. During use, it was barely noticeable, didn’t pull on the glasses, and was simply forgotten while gaming. Whether the length is sufficient to reach from the sofa to the media player depends on your setup. With a smartphone, this isn’t an issue, but if your console is farther away, you’ll need to plan your seating position.
2D Gaming: Right in the Middle Instead of in Front
In classic 2D gaming, the R1 really showcased its greatest strength: immersion. Calmer role-playing games felt significantly more engaging on the headset than on a TV or monitor. The virtual screen fills a large portion of your field of view, and you’re literally drawn into the game world. The lightweight design helps you forget you’re even wearing the headset after a while. If you wear headphones while gaming anyway, you’ll hardly notice the headset as an extra hassle.
Technically, there was little to complain about either. During fast movements, we didn’t observe any noticeable motion trails, and motion blur wasn’t distracting. We also didn’t notice any perceptible input lag—though we didn’t conduct a lab comparison using a high-speed camera. The difference between 60 and 120 hertz wasn’t dramatically noticeable on the Xbox during normal gameplay. The full 240 hertz is reserved for the PC, which we’ll retest in an upcoming update.

Of course, we couldn’t skip a must-try: a round of League of Legends on the PC. With its isometric view and many small HUD elements, this MOBA is a real test of the headset’s text rendering capabilities. Minimap, item bar, cooldowns—small icons and numbers everywhere. With the screen set too close, the minimap and item bar slide uncomfortably to the edge of the field of view. But with a little more simulated distance, the game played smoothly. Conveniently, the dock even offers a dedicated MOBA mode under GameVisual, which we activated right away for this session. Team fights remained smooth even in the heat of battle, with no noticeable distracting streaks. The glasses are definitely suitable for an immersive after-work game. However, anyone who plays ranked matches seriously is better off sticking to a monitor for maximum clarity and precision.
Testing the Asus AR Glasses’ Instant 3D: The ROG XREAL R1 Delivers Everything from Impressive to Useless
Instant 3D is one of the R1’s most exciting features—and at the same time, its most inconsistent. The feature converts standard 2D content into a 3D display in real time. The software analyzes the image and layers it into depth planes. For technical reasons, this only works at 30 or 60 hertz per eye; 240 hertz is out of the question here. Our conclusion after playing several games: The effect can look impressive—or go completely wrong.
The negative example came from *The Witcher 3*, of all games. A foggy, washed-out border formed around the character, clearly visible with every movement. It looked artificial and was extremely distracting. In this form, Instant 3D was simply unusable for us here. Halo 3 also failed early on: even the menu stuttered, subtitles and text flickered, and at times the entire image appeared unstable. Diablo IV initially looked impressively three-dimensional. However, during fast-paced action with many enemies and effects, it quickly became straining on the eyes. For longer sessions, the mode fell short.
Fallout: New Vegas showed that there’s another way. The display wasn’t flawless, but it was smooth and usable—the best of our test games. The pattern here: Calm games with clearly separated layers and slow pacing tend to work well. Fast-paced action, lots of effects, and fine details like hair, grilles, or small text overwhelm the conversion process. Even the Xbox’s tile menu looked slightly jagged in places. And the layers of Diablo’s title screen weren’t recognized convincingly.
The bottom line is that Instant 3D is a feature worth trying out, not a permanent solution. With the right titles, it creates a real “aha” moment. However, you shouldn’t rely on it—and it’s best not to base your purchase decision on it. Due to a lack of compatible software, we haven’t yet been able to test true SBS content with natively separated images for each eye.
ROG Control Dock: The Control Center
The Control Dock GCD01 expands the headset’s connectivity with standard ports: two HDMI 2.0 inputs, one DisplayPort 1.4, and USB-C. It supports input signals up to 4K at 60 Hz. This means the PlayStation 5, Xbox, and desktop PCs can all be connected to the headset—the Switch can even be connected via its original dock. The dock itself is surprisingly lightweight and measures approximately 22 × 9.5 × 2 cm. Despite its light weight, it sits securely on the table without slipping.
It takes a little getting used to operating the headset via the five-way switch, but once you do, it’s more comfortable than using the buttons on the headset itself. We really liked the source-switching feature: with both a laptop and a console connected to the dock at the same time, switching back and forth worked flawlessly. Anyone who switches back and forth between gaming after work and work itself will appreciate this.
In addition, the dock offers the typical ROG display features. The eight GameVisual modes noticeably alter the display. Scenery mode, for example, is quite dark—which may or may not be suitable depending on the game. Much of it comes down to personal preference. Night Vision, on the other hand, was disappointing: Dark areas became barely more visible, and the effect simply wasn’t noticeable in-game. With GamePlus, you can, among other things, display a crosshair fixed in the center of the screen. In Halo 3, however, the in-game crosshair was positioned two to three centimeters lower. Both crosshairs were offset on top of each other—the feature wasn’t helpful. The FPS counter and playtime timer, on the other hand, worked as expected. Nice extras for stats enthusiasts, but nothing more.
Sound by Bose: Impressive, but Everyone Can Hear It
When it comes to sound, Asus pleasantly surprised us with the ROG XREAL R1 in our test. The Bose-tuned speakers integrated into the headband deliver clear voices and powerful sound effects. Movies, TV shows, and even action-packed games are fun to enjoy without headphones. Of course, good headphones offer more bass, isolation, and spatial depth—but that doesn’t mean the built-in sound is bad.
The major drawback is the sound leakage. Someone standing about one meter away can hear a large portion of the audio; dialogue is sometimes almost completely intelligible. So, quietly watching something in the background while someone is sleeping or working in the same room doesn’t really work this way. The reverse effect is curious: the person wearing the headphones is so immersed in the sound that others can’t always reach them right away—even though they themselves can hear everything. For true privacy, there’s no substitute for headphones.
The microphone, on the other hand, performs exceptionally well. In Discord, Microsoft Teams, and WhatsApp calls, my voice sounded bright, clear, and easy to understand. Keyboard clicks, fan noise, and ambient sounds weren’t picked up in a distracting way. This makes the glasses fully suitable for voice chat and calls.
Movies, TV Shows, and Bedtime Cinema
In addition to gaming, movies and TV shows are the obvious use cases. And here, the R1 actually delivers on its promise of a cinematic experience. Animated series, in particular, looked fantastic on the giant screen with their vibrant colors. For regular movies, the picture was pleasant, though a good TV renders fine details and text more sharply. If you position the screen very close, you get the feeling of sitting in the front row of a movie theater. Impressive—but not comfortable for everyone over the long term.
The bed is an underrated advantage. The screen can be easily mounted on the ceiling or any other suitable location. No more craning your neck, no more having to glance sideways at the TV. Two limitations remain: The headrest arms feel a bit bulkier when lying down than when sitting. And because the sound is audible to those around you, headphones are absolutely necessary if you’re next to someone who’s sleeping.
Wearing Comfort: Weight Over Long Periods
That leaves the long-term question in our Asus ROG XREAL R1 review: How do the glasses feel over several hours? According to the manufacturer, they weigh 91 grams; our scale showed 92 grams—we’ll generously chalk up that one gram to measurement tolerance. When worn, the weight is less noticeable than the number might initially suggest. Shorter sessions are completely comfortable.
After about an hour, you start to feel pressure on your nose and ears, and slight indentations may form where the nose pads rest. It was interesting to note that a two-hour gaming session was hardly any more physically uncomfortable than a one-hour session.
The temple lock mechanism felt a bit strange at first. When it clicked for the first time while adjusting the glasses, we briefly thought we’d damaged them. In fact, the temples are designed to snap into place at several different positions. Once you know that, the sound seems much less alarming—and the adjustment feature proves quite helpful for better adapting the glasses to the shape of your head.
The more critical factor is eye strain. After two hours of gaming, our eyes felt more strained than after a comparable session in front of a monitor. When watching movies and TV shows, the strain was sometimes even more noticeable. This is likely because your gaze remains fixed on the same area for a long time. We therefore consider ASUS’s recommendation of a ten-minute break after 45 to 60 minutes to be realistic. Not everyone needs it exactly after 45 minutes, but it definitely doesn’t hurt.
In addition, the glasses get warm during use, which is especially noticeable in the upper area near the eyebrows. In our experience, the heat depended more on how long we used them than on the content we were viewing. On hot summer days, this is likely to become uncomfortable more quickly. The prescription lens inserts were also quick to install. However, people who wear glasses should factor in the cost of custom lenses from an optician.
Who is the Asus ROG XREAL R1 best for?
The R1 is ideal for buyers with a clear use case. If you want an immersive gaming experience but don’t have room for a huge TV, this is a great tool. The same goes for a home theater setup in bed or on the couch. Headphones are a must, though, if someone’s already asleep in the next room. The concept is also exciting as a second-screen replacement while traveling.
On the other hand, anyone who needs razor-sharp small text or has sensitive eyes should definitely try it out before buying. The same goes for anyone who’s primarily interested in Instant 3D. And if you just want a big screen, you can simply get a very good TV or monitor for around 900 euros. You buy the R1 for the experience, not for practicality.
Conclusion of the Asus ROG XREAL R1 Review: Cool Technology with Compromises
The Asus ROG XREAL R1 often left us in awe during our test. The massive virtual image creates a level of immersion that no monitor can match. The black level of the Micro-OLEDs is impressive, and the rock-solid Anchor Mode along with the lightning-fast electrochromic lenses demonstrate just how mature the core technology is. Add to that really good sound, a flawless microphone, and a dock that connects your console and laptop in a flash.
For around 900 euros, however, you’ll have to accept some compromises. The viewing window is too small for our liking, and small text appears blurry. After longer sessions, your eyes also start to feel the strain more noticeably than they do with a monitor. Operating the glasses requires patience, and the open-ear design fills half the room with sound. And Instant 3D fluctuates between impressive and unusable, depending on the game. In its current state, this feature isn’t a reason to buy the device.
The bottom line is that this is an exciting piece of technology that has its moments—and knows its limits. Those who are willing to accept the compromises and have the right use case will love the R1. Everyone else might want to wait for the next generation.

Compromises remain, however: the field of view is limited, eye fatigue sets in faster than with a monitor, and Instant 3D performance varies significantly. Those investing around $900 get a lot of technology – but should know what they're getting into beforehand.
