AVM FRITZ!DECT 500 in test – entry-level light bulb for the Smart Home

AVM’s smart home range includes almost every product you can imagine for your home. Accordingly, light bulbs must also be included. The DECT 500 is another product in the DECT range that fits perfectly into the ecosystem with a Fritz!Box. We test the smart bulb for you.

Setting up and features

The bulb fits into any standard E27 socket and can thus be easily screwed into just about any lamp in your home. Only in the maximum number you are limited, because only ten DECT 500 can be registered per router from AVM.

Registering with the Fritz!Box is just as easy as with the other products. Switch on and press the DECT button – done. To configure the bulb, you have as always several options. One – and as always the most convenient option for the first setting – is via the web interface of the Fritz!Box.

The other option is the Fritz!Smart Home app. Control via it is also simple and convenient, but because the light bulb can’t do much either. We can turn it on and off, as well as adjust the brightness and color temperature or color.

If you want the DECT 500 to wake you up, this is possible. After a set time, the bulb can be turned on, or turned off. Burglars can also be deterred. In a set period of time, the light can turn off and on again randomly.

Integration

As in the other tests, we look at whether the DECT 500 light bulb can be integrated into various smart home systems. We test this with openHAB, Home Assistant and Home Connect Plus. Voice control via Google Home or Amazon Alexa is possible, but requires some effort.

The DECT 500 can be added to the three systems mentioned without any problems. Since only 36 colors are offered by the bulb, we cannot use the full color spectrum, of course. In Home Assistant and openHAB, the color that is closest was automatically selected. Home Connect Plus did not change the color at all if the color did not match.

With the other products, integration was a click, which is exactly how it works here.

Conclusion

AVM can make its smart home products look good. For starters, they are worth a look, as always, but trade-offs have to be made. Setting up voice control is a bit more involved, a tutorial on our part seems worthwhile. On the other hand, the bulb DECT 500 can be integrated into various other systems with a click.

As always, a Fritz!Box is mandatory, at least to control the products from the house of AVM the easiest.

For this price with the DECT standard, it hardly gets any better.
