beyerdynamic Amiron 100 Review: Powerful In-Ear Headphones

New in-ear headphones from Heilbronn: In addition to the Amiron 300 (our test), the manufacturer also presented a more affordable and somewhat slimmed-down offshoot in September, which goes by the name of beyerdynamic Amiron 100. But it’s not just the range of functions that differs, there are also differences in terms of shape and wearing comfort. Our test reveals how good the cheaper model sounds and what it has to offer.

beyerdynamic Amiron 100 Review: pen design in a noble guise

  • classic pen design
  • high-quality workmanship
  • low weight; excellent wearing comfort

In contrast to the slightly more expensive Amiron 300, which rely on a modern earbud look, the beyerdynamic Amiron 100 rely on a classic stylus design, as we know it from the AirPods Pro and other models, for example.

The in-ear headphones also come in a choice of black or cream and have an elegant, high-quality look. With their matt black exterior, they look very harmonious, with silver design elements providing a pleasant contrast.

The build quality offers no cause for criticism; all the weld seams and transitions are of a very high quality. I find the flattened outer side, which is responsible for operation as a touch panel and can also be immediately felt blindly, to be very practical.

The oval charging case measures 43 mm x 25.8 mm x 48.35 mm and is therefore pleasantly handy. The weight is also rather low at around 42 grams. Unfortunately, beyerdynamic installs the USB-C charging port on the underside so that it cannot be placed upright on surfaces.

I really like the wearing comfort of the beyerdynamic Amiron 100. This is partly due to the pleasant shape and partly due to the low weight. Each of the earbuds weighs just 4.15 grams – but without the silicone ear tips.

But even with the ear tips installed, the weight is only around 4.3 grams, making the Amiron 100 one of the lightest in-ear headphones. In addition to the pre-installed ear tips in size M, the manufacturer also includes five additional pairs in sizes XS to XL, so that everyone is guaranteed to find the ideal fit.

Features and battery life

  • Bluetooth 5.3 with LC3
  • only standard codecs SBC and AAC
  • Wearer detection, ANC and transparency mode

In terms of features, the beyerdynamic Amiron 100 are somewhat slimmed down compared to the Amiron 300. Although these in-ear headphones also rely on the modern Bluetooth 5.3 standard including the efficient LC3 codec and an excellent range of up to 15 meters, the 100s lack high-resolution codecs.

While the Amiron 300 can also handle Hi-Res audio thanks to LDAC, you’ll have to make do with SBC and AAC with the Amiron 100. Unfortunately, there is also no Bluetooth multipoint for pairing with two audio sources simultaneously.

What there is, however, is a wear detection function that automatically pauses playback when you remove one or both earbuds. It is also possible to use just one earbud thanks to mono mode.

Also included is active noise cancellation (ANC) with a matching counterpart in the form of transparency mode. Here, too, the options are slimmed down compared to the more expensive model, as there is no adaptive adjustment or regulation in different levels.

A total of six MEMS microphones are also installed to ensure clear intelligibility during phone calls. Loud ambient noise should also be filtered out automatically.

Good battery life of the beyerdynamic Amiron 100

  • 6 hours battery life with ANC
  • 8 hours battery life without ANC
  • 27 hours total runtime with charging case

The efficient Bluetooth 5.3 standard ensures good battery life in the beyerdynamic Amiron 100. A total of six hours of playback is possible if you use the ANC function. Without active noise cancellation, the in-ears even last up to 8 hours.

beyerdynamic Amiron 100

Also a good figure, but not a record-breaking one. The charging case adds another 19 hours of battery life, so you can enjoy up to 27 hours of music before the charging case and in-ears run out of juice.

There is also a quick-charging function: 15 minutes in the charging case is enough for the Amiron 100 to play music for another 3 hours.

Handling and Companion App

  • Precise touch control
  • Customizable operation
  • Clear companion app

The beyerdynamic Amiron 100 are operated via the touch-sensitive outer sides, which are very comfortable to touch thanks to the flattened surface. The operation is very fast and precise, which virtually eliminates incorrect entries. The operating concept is also well thought out and can also be customized within the beyerdynamic app.

The commands include a single, double or triple tap, as well as holding down the touch surface for two seconds, which performs different actions on each side.

For example, a single tap starts or pauses playback, a double tap switches between ANC, transparency mode and normal mode, while a press and hold decreases or increases the volume. If you wish, you can also deactivate all commands.

Further settings can also be made in the companion app. It also provides clear information about the charging status of the earbuds and charging case on the start page. You can also switch the voice assistant on and off here, as well as activate or deactivate wear detection (“Automatic pause”).

Gamers will be pleased with the low latency mode, which synchronizes sound and image better. But the most interesting feature is certainly the equalizer. Here you can influence the sound with one of five presets or save your own presets using a 5-band EQ.

Audio quality, ANC and microphones

  • Frequency response from 20 Hz to 22,000 Hz
  • Pleasantly detailed sound image
  • excellent airiness in the treble range with slight EQ adjustments

Although the beyerdynamic Amiron 100 only cover the standard Bluetooth codecs and “only” reproduce a frequency response of 20 Hz to 22,000 Hz (the Amiron 300 go up to 40,000 Hz), the in-ear headphones surprised me positively from a sound perspective.

This is exactly where the more expensive model left something of a feather in its cap with a narrow, one-dimensional sound image. This is surprisingly different with the Amiron 100. The sound mix is noticeably airier and fuller and reproduces the music in a pleasantly clean and detailed way across all frequencies.

beyerdynamic Amiron 100

I particularly like the presentation of the highs and mids, which give the overall sound a pleasant liveliness and lightness. However, the standard mix still offers some room for adjustment, depending on personal preferences:

By lowering the bass slightly and increasing the upper mids and treble, I was able to achieve a fairly neutral, airy (if somewhat cool) sound image, which in my eyes doesn’t have to hide behind the best in-ear headphones.

Of course, the top models from Sennheiser, Bose, Cambridge Audio or Bowers & Wilkins sound even better, but with the right EQ setting, the Amiron 100 outperform the AirPods Pro 2 or Sony WF-1000XM5, for example, from a sound perspective – even if this is of course rather subjective.

ANC and transparency mode can’t keep up

  • somewhat disappointing ANC
  • decent transparency mode

However, the beyerdynamic Amiron 100 can’t compete in the top class when it comes to active noise cancellation and transparency mode. The ANC in particular disappointed me a little in the test, as I couldn’t make out too much of a difference compared to the normal mode without noise suppression.

Monotonous, low frequencies in particular are significantly reduced, but medium and high frequencies such as voices or the robot vacuum cleaner working in the next room still come through almost unhindered.

beyerdynamic Amiron 100

Transparency mode allows ambient noise to pass through more strongly and delivers a fairly natural sound, which allows quite good communication with the earphones used, although the competition is ahead here too.

It’s a shame, because anyone who places particularly high value on noise suppression with in-ear headphones will unfortunately hardly be happy here.

Microphone quality of the beyerdynamic Amiron 100

With a total of six built-in microphones, the beyerdynamic Amiron 100 aim to deliver convincing quality and, in conjunction with the ambient noise suppression, also provide good intelligibility in noisy environments.

While the latter works quite well, the microphone quality is only at a mixed level in my opinion.

Microphone test recording beyerdynamic Amiron 100:

Microphone test recording Cambridge Audio Melomania M100:

A comparison with some of the competitors’ microphones shows that the Amiron 100’s recordings are noticeably lacking in detail. Your own voice sounds a little watery and unclear, but the quality is sufficient for occasional short phone calls.

beyerdynamic Amiron 100 Review: Conclusion

With the beyerdynamic Amiron 100, the manufacturer delivers exciting in-ear headphones. They are cheaper than the company’s own top model, the Amiron 300, but lack some features (such as Bluetooth multipoint or LDAC), while the battery life is also somewhat shorter.

In my opinion, the cheaper model has the edge in terms of sound, as the sound is pleasantly detailed and very airy and lively right up to the treble. With some fine-tuning of the equalizer, they even sound better than my AirPods Pro 2 and are among the best in-ear headphones.

Unfortunately, the active noise cancellation is disappointing, as I can hardly hear any difference compared to the mode without ANC. The microphone quality is also only average.

So if you place particular value on good sound, the beyerdynamic Amiron 100 are convincing in-ears. However, the more well-rounded overall package is available from the competition and sometimes for less money.
