In addition to the headphones themselves, the scope of delivery includes a drawstring bag for easy storage on the go and an enclosed manual. Also included is a 3 meter long, detachable cable with 3-pin mini XLR plug to 3.5 mm stereo jack – as well as a screw adapter from 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm jack.

Optics & processing

  • Modern, timeless DT design
  • Solid workmanship with high-quality Verlours ear pads
  • Detachable mini XLR cable for more flexibility

Visually, the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X clearly follow the design line of the previous DT series. However, the manufacturer has added a slightly stronger accent to the headband by highlighting the logo more effectively. In general, the tried-and-tested closed over-ear design is thus retained and ensures a robust, modern and timeless look. At the same time, the style is not only suitable for the recording studio, because thanks to the color combination of black and silver-grey velour ear pads, it also integrates well at home on the desk. The traditional matt black ear cups and metal earpieces also contribute to the longevity. Not only are they functional, they also blend harmoniously into the image of a studio-ready setup.

As far as the workmanship is concerned, there are no compromises in the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X. The studio headphones feel solid throughout, the materials look high-quality and the joints are tight. We didn’t notice any looseness in the test, although when the ear cups are turned in and out, a cracking noise similar to that of the previous model can be heard. The advantage of the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X is in any case the detachable mini XLR cable, which makes the application possibilities even more flexible. At the same time, it extends the service life of the headphones by allowing the cable to be safely stowed away on the move without being kinked.

Sound

  • Powerful, detailed and balanced sound thanks to STELLAR.45 drivers
  • Precise bass, neutral mids and pleasantly airy highs
  • Wide spatiality and good isolation

In terms of sound, the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X are also clearly based on the DNA of the well-known DT 770 PRO. The result is impressive: The sound is powerful and rich in detail on the one hand, and very balanced on the other. beyerdynamic uses the STELLAR.45 driver with 48 Ohm impedance, whose potential can be unleashed on smartphones and laptops as well as on professional hi-fi interfaces. In contrast to the 80 or 250 ohms of the previous model, the DT 770 PRO X therefore no longer requires a headphone amplifier, but instead comes clean, loud and dynamic straight from the factory.

Lows, mids and highs

In terms of bass, the DT 770 PRO X delivers a present and full bass range that tends relatively little towards booming. Even at lower tunings, it remains well controlled, but tends to be slightly boosted. Other headphone manufacturers, such as Bose or Sony, often push the bass to the limit, which can sometimes be perceived as too dominant. The mids continue to dominate, always remaining neutral and thus reproducing voices and instruments precisely instead of overemphasizing them. A closer look at the treble reveals its many facets. In our opinion, the tuned treble is harmonious, airy and a touch more pleasant than the DT 770 with 250 ohms.

Areas of application

It’s not uncommon for gaming fans to turn to studio headphones, especially as they enable precise localization on the battlefield. We can only underline this argument from our own experience: The reproduction of a wide spatial stage when mixing music can also be perfectly transferred to the gaming world. On top of that, the closed over-ear headphones shield external noise well, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in your own flow. The more modern driver design also results in slightly improved clarity, which harmoniously rounds off the sound image. All this makes the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X ideal for podcasts, voice recordings and, of course, mixing.

Wearing comfort

  • Generally tighter contact pressure than other headphones
  • Adjustable metal headband for both large and small heads
  • Good fit thanks to padded imitation leather headband

Headphones should not only have a good sound, but should also sit comfortably during longer sessions. Beyerdynamic’s many years of expertise also come into play with the DT 770 PRO X. Although the ear cups completely enclose the ears, there are no annoying pressure points at the base of the ears. Nevertheless, the general contact pressure is tighter than with corresponding models such as the Bose QuietComfort 35 II. This is largely due to the velour-covered ear pads, which are soft and breathable, but sometimes cause heat in midsummer or during longer sessions. In terms of good insulation, however, the ear pads do their job very well.

The adjustable headband of the studio headphones, which weigh just under 300 grams, distributes the weight better. Various points are marked on both sides of the metal headband to indicate the amount of weight that can be pulled in and out. This means that the headphones can be easily adjusted to fit both small and large heads. There are also smaller cut-outs in the area of the head cushion so that the head itself experiences less pressure. The headband is a different story: it is made of spring steel but is also covered with soft artificial leather, which makes it more comfortable to wear.

The wearing comfort therefore remains essentially based on its predecessor, including its advantages and minor weaknesses. Ultimately, you first have to get used to the DNA of the DT series, especially when it comes to the firmer hold and contact pressure of the studio headphones. But once you’ve been in this world for a while, you won’t want to do without the beyerdynamic headphones.

beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X vs. DT 770 PRO

  • Modern driver and different impedances between the models
  • Greater suitability for everyday use thanks to detachable mini XLR cable
  • No or less need for an external amplifier

A direct comparison of the classic DT 770 PRO with the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X should be particularly exciting – after all, the DT 770 PRO has established itself as the studio standard for many years. The built-in driver and the different impedance already make the biggest difference. While the current model relies on the modern STELLAR.45 driver and 48 ohms, the previous model has a classic dynamic driver. The DT 770 PRO is available with either 32, 80 or 250 ohms. As a result, the X model is easier to operate, while the top-of-the-range DT 770 PRO model requires a dedicated headphone amplifier.

In terms of wearing comfort, the models are largely congruent, although the DT 770 PRO X proved to be more comfortable and stable on the head in the test. In addition, the cable on the X model is detachable, while the DT 770 PRO is permanently integrated with the cable. In terms of sound, the models share the usual “Beyer sound” – the bass remains powerful, the mids are clear and the highs are brilliantly staged in typical Beyer fashion. Overall, this shows that the X model is able to cover a broader spectrum in terms of both functionality and sound.

Conclusion

In the test, the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X proves to be a successful upgrade of its legendary predecessor, the DT 770 PRO, which has already proven itself in everyday use. The technology in particular has been brought up to date, thanks to the STELLAR.45 driver. In addition, the low impedance of 48 ohms and the detachable mini XLR cable increase the suitability for everyday use – especially when using different audio devices. And finally, the wearing comfort is also impressive – although this was already the case with the predecessor.

In direct comparison to the classic DT 770 PRO, the main advantages are the simpler drive and the focus on greater practical usability. Last but not least, something has definitely changed in terms of sound, so that the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X sounds noticeably more dynamic and clearer.

All in all, the beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO X remains true to its sonic origins, but scores with a modern overall package thanks to the further development. So if you are looking for high-quality, closed headphones in studio quality, you should be completely satisfied with this variant. Owners of the previous DT 770 PRO model, on the other hand, are unlikely to feel any great incentive to switch straight away – especially if the headphones are only used at home. After all, the DT 770 PRO X cost around 50 euros more than the previous model at the time of testing.
