beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO Review: An outstanding open gaming headset

After the excellent MMX 300 PRO gaming headset, which narrowly missed out on the Platinum Award in our test, the German manufacturer is now entering another model into the race. The new beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO is not only very similar in terms of its name, but also has an open design, which has a noticeable effect on the sound. In the test, we clarify which variant is suitable for whom.

beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO Review: Elegant design from Heilbronn

  • elegant, simple design
  • outstanding workmanship
  • very good wearing comfort

With headsets and headphones from beyerdynamic, you can always be sure that the design fits. Of course, this also applies to the new beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO, which looks very similar to the MMX 300 PRO.

This model also has an elegant, matt black appearance, with only the orange PRO lettering and the manufacturer’s logo on the ear cups providing a fresh color accent. Of course, the quality of workmanship is once again excellent. The headset is made of robust metal and feels absolutely high-quality. Everything seems to have been cast from a single mold. Nothing creaks, nothing creaks. Perfect.

The padding of the ear cups, which can of course be replaced again, is pleasantly thick at around 25 millimetres and the headband is also very good at minimizing pressure from the head with a thickness of around 10 mm. All in all, the MMX 330 PRO is therefore extremely comfortable to wear. With a weight of 318 grams, it is slightly heavier than the 300 (314g), but you hardly notice the difference.

beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO and DT 770 PRO X

In a direct comparison with the beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X headphones, however, I would give the latter model the edge in terms of wearing comfort, as the padding is simply noticeably softer. Nevertheless, the MMX 330 PRO is undoubtedly one of the most comfortable gaming headsets you can currently buy.

Operation and practical test

  • Plug and play connectivity
  • Long cable; but no wireless use possible

The beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO is also a classic analog gaming headset. The 3.5 mm jack connection is located on the underside of the left ear cup and is used to connect the headset to the PC, games consoles or other devices with a suitable port.

The cable is the same as the one supplied with the MMX 300 PRO and, with a length of 2.5 meters, offers sufficient freedom – but the freedom of a wireless gaming headset is not achieved, of course.

Integrated into the cable, but also detachable, is a Y-adapter that can be used to separate the microphone and output tracks. The cable also has an inline remote control that can be used to mute the headset and adjust the volume.

Accordingly, the beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO is quickly and easily ready for use on any platform and performs reliably without any software. Very convenient, especially as additional settings are not necessary.

beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO with impressive sound

  • open construction
  • impressive, spatial and natural sound
  • 5 Hz to 40,000 Hz frequency response

The main difference between the beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO and the MMX 300 PRO lies in the design. While the 300 PRO relies on closed acoustics, the new 330 PRO has an open design. And this has a huge impact on the sound.

Closed headphones provide better shielding against external noise, which ensures deeper immersion and richer bass. The result is a powerful, lively sound that already offers very good spatiality with the closed MMX 300 PRO – which provides a clear localization of sounds and thus an advantage in competitive games.

The beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO, on the other hand, has a completely different sound with its open-back design. The sound is noticeably more natural, more balanced and also scores with a much better spatiality. However, this comes at the expense of bass reproduction.

Not that this is bad with the open gaming headset. But those who like more oomph will be better served by the MMX 300 PRO. Nevertheless, the sound of the beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO made a lasting impression on me during the test.

Open gaming headsets are few and far between anyway. And the advantages in terms of spatial representation, but also the natural reproduction of the acoustics, are obvious. The headset not only cuts an excellent figure when gaming, but also takes music to a whole new level – at least if you don’t have 500 euro headphones at home.

The headset also owes this to the STELLAR.45 drivers, which have an impedance of 48 ohms and an enormous frequency response of 5 Hz to 40,000 Hz. The design is therefore exactly the same as the MMX 300 PRO, but the sound image differs significantly.

The open sound image really comes into its own in games where sound plays an important role. In the online shooter The Finals, I can perfectly locate the footsteps of approaching opponents and gain a noticeable advantage. In the single-player action RPG God of War: Ragnarök, the headset skillfully reproduces even the finest nuances such as Kratos’ breathing or the cracking of branches in my surroundings.

beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO microphone

Pretty impressive. I also have the feeling that the MMX 330 PRO is slightly louder at its peak than the MMX 300 PRO. In any case, the maximum volume is more than sufficient.

Excellent microphone quality

  • Flexible, 7.5 cm long microphone boom
  • Clear, detailed reproduction of the voice

The beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO takes over the excellent microphone of the 300 PRO, which already impressed with its outstanding quality in the test. It is mounted on a 7.5 cm long and flexible microphone boom and is equipped with a removable foam pop guard.

We could go into great detail here and lose ourselves in praise, but I’ll keep it short: there is currently no gaming headset that delivers better microphone quality. Your own voice is crystal clear and very detailed. You can also use the mic to make voice-over recordings or stream without any problems.

As with the MMX 300 PRO, however, the suppression of ambient noise is rather weak. Particularly in loud environments, these still come through noticeably – albeit at a reduced level. However, this can hardly be held against the headset.

beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO Review: Conclusion

Like the MMX 300 PRO, the new beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO is also completely convincing. The design and build quality are beyond reproach anyway. But the new, open version delivers a particularly impressive performance in terms of sound.

Although you have to sacrifice a little on the depth of the bass and get a weaker isolation of external noise, you benefit from a noticeably better spatiality and naturalness of the sound.

This makes the MMX 330 PRO an even better choice for competitive games, but also for listening to music. The acoustics of the gaming headset are excellent across all genres and media. The manufacturer pairs this with perhaps the best microphone you can currently get in a headset and excellent wearing comfort.

The only real downer is the lack of wireless functionality. So if you need the freedom of a wireless gaming headset, you won’t find it here. However, if you don’t mind the long jack cable, the beyerdynamic MMX 330 PRO (as well as the MMX 300 PRO) is an excellent choice.
